ok, well ask MR nishi directly:
in that slot will I be able to play the MFG of pazos, Carnivore2, or Philips Music Module?

What do you mean by official/unofficial, part/not part?

There is some hardware which is mandatory in order to build a Msx machine (for instance you must always put a Psg audio chip). 9990 is not mandatory. The same applies to Scc, Msx Audio and a lot of other hardware. So, it isn't unreasonable to not implement them on the fpga of the new Msx. Of course i suppose they will add legacy connectors to achieve backward hardware compatibility, which is perfectly doable through fpga.

If you think the MSX3 lacks OPL4 or V9990, why not make an option to connect them directly to the MSX3? Perhaps anyone can make one. Maybe even easier than that for the legacy MSX.

MSX audio is part of the MSX standard, as an optional add-on
otoh scc can never be part of an MSX standard because it is konami proprietary tech.

And yet SCC was supported by the 1chipMSX and MSX-AUDIO was not.

I don’t think the boundaries are so black & white.

That was most likely because of compatibilty with older games or request from fans. but yeah you raise a point here.

So, to me, if we speak about MSX3, the most logical thing is MSXturboR with V9990 and OPL4. Ideally, to make this combination more like what would/may have been the V9978, the V9958 of the turboR should be superimposed on the V9990. This is the only missing thing, at least not something easy to get.

OK, that's my dreaming Smile

The fact that Mr Nishi rejects V9990 is more like a personal thing, I think, as is pretty clear from his story. And yeah, I understand that it reminds him of some bitter times that he'd rather forget.

I feel the same way. MSX 3 = Turbo-R + OPL4 + V9990 superimposed with V9958.

While we wait for a FPGA implementation of V9990 superimposed with V9958 (it can be a LONG wait), is it possible to have a MSX3 XML configuration like that in openMSX?

At least we can have some fun coding something in a virtual MSX3. Smile

The superimpose part is not implemented, other than that, the config is in the boosted turboR.

I agree 100%. And he is confirming to us that the V9990 is MSX related. And I'm happy that the MSX community has embraced this VDP (since 1994!). It is nice to see, at last, 16-bit era games running on our machines. Kai's Metal Dragon port to Megadrive/Genesis has shown how good the V9990 is. Both versions are almost identical (well, the MSX one uses more colours on screen at once Smile):

Metal Dragon MSX
Metal Dragon Megadrive/Genesis

And the game even runs at an acceptable speed on a bare bone Z80 MSX2 (yes, 8-bit computer with a Z80 3,58MHz CPU and only 64kB of RAM): Metal Dragon MSX (Z80).

I hope someday KAI starts to sell it as a digital game. I can only run V9990 games with openMSX.

I’d like a real V9990 with superimpose honestly… It was planned for the KrakenGraph Full version, but I haven’t heard any recent updates on it.
