MRC Member Albert Buurmeijer (MSXHolder) died at 62

Dear MSX friends,

Already a few weeks ago one of my best friends, Albert Buurmeijer, died at the age of 62. On Wednesday the 8th of June. I didn't gave it much exposure, first of all because of my own emotions, second of all because the family needed some time to think over my request to make it public. You see, Albert was not someone who liked to be in the spotlight. Luckily the family turned around and I think it's time to give you a little insight. Albert was a kind and warm person who was always available to help out with solving technical problems during the development and testing of SuperSoniq's MSX products, and we had many late night talks about the past, present and future of our beloved MSX computer. We imported a lot of MSX goods for repairs and our collections, we did many treasure hunts around Holland, picking up stuff and visiting stores, fairs and meetings.

Albert knew all the key players during the commercial MSX period. He was for instance a frequent guest at the Philips Natlab in Eindhoven where Philips' MSX development took place. Albert also helped out Philips at the famous Firato Fairs. Albert also tested a lot of Philips MSX hardware, some of which never hit the market (but ended up in his collection). Apart from all this, Albert was married to Rieke Wendt for 39 years.

Last but not least, Albert probably has had one of the biggest MSX collections on this planet with well over 120 different computers (not counting any doubles), countless hardware interfaces, racks with computer software and all the documentation that came with it.

To give you a glimpse of his collection I asked Saleh Alzaid, one of the biggest collectors in the Middle East, to share the video footage he shot during his visit to Albert's house in October 2015. It's a little personal but it's the only footage we have.

I wish his best friend Rob, his family and friends all the needed strength in the coming time.

Albert, I'm proud to have known you and your legacy will not be forgotten.

Even with a quick search, you can see that his passion for collecting had already contributed many finer pieces of knowledge regarding rare machines and prototypes. His efforts will forever be remembered.

Like said before, together with Remy and Wammes, we lost three true dedicated MSX pioneers this year. I know Albert as a MVM clubmember; A modest man with the most knowledge of MSX hardware ever. If you wanted to know (correct) technical specifications and information, often included with a complete history of a particular MSX, he was the guy!! And I am damned sure he had the biggest MSX computer/hardware collection on earth ever! With some extremely rare computers and prototypes. Hope someone will preserve his MSX collection for the future.

I had visited him several years ago. He had repaired a Sony SMC drive for
me and showed me his huge collection. He was a very friendly man and a
lot of passion for the MSX event. Also I wish everyone close to him the best.

My Condolences.
Every time I read those kind of post on mrc a deep sense of sadness catch me.
We are on this planet for a very short period of time, a wink, and when we leave, a lot of good things we have done, are lost.
Recently I am beginning to read too much frequently those kind of messages, meaning that time ha passed

For many of us, the last 20 years were the busiest yet, with having something of a career, a family and stuff like that. Being occupied makes time goes by so fast. And suddenly, people around us are old and start dying.

I have a lot of time to myself because I'm single, but I assure you that the perception is the same, it doesn't depend on commitments, it depends on age. The further we get, the more time flies, it is our brain that discards frames because it is now too full of everything.

I remember Albert, he repaired my AVT DPF-550 drive back in 1990/91 where I send it to MSX Centrum Amsterdam. He was the repairman. Retracing back, there was some oscillation from the power supply, and he replaced the drive also. Some people with a technical background mentioned Albert often in positive way.

My condolences to Riekie Wendt, the family and to you Sander.

A week after his death a fellow msx'er gave me about ten big paper boxes but I wasn't throwing anything away. All is still here.
