Long time scene member Mi-Chi enters the compo with DICED - Tournament. A Wild-West saloon dice throwing game that will keep you at the table for hours. Don't forget to fill up your glass! Together with Def Danny, Mi-Chi delivers a fairly unique game for our most beloved 8-bit wonder.

In this craftily made MSX1 game, you will put your wits up against over 190 unique opponents in 17 tournaments of rolling the dice. Crush the competition, or be crushed. Outclass your fellow players with sovereignty and strategy, or simply outsmart them. It's up to you; after all - you're the Billy The Kid of your 8-bit, the Calamity Jane of your own game, or the Davy Crockett of the feeling in your gambling gut. You could even be the Butch Cassidy of your MSX-emulating Wii, if you'd just give this game a go as recommended!

The link to the MSXdev page doesn't work. Here's the correct one.

Again variable-width font and mouse support! Those appear to be a common trait between this year's entries.

This feels like Yahtzee but with so much extra around it? Unlockable music, fancy graphics, ...? (Sorry, I haven't played much of it, being sick and all)

Thank you guys! Yes, the base of the game is the 5 dice game known as Yahtzee, ( or "Kniffel" in German). I can recommend to play the detailed tutorial. Take some time to evolve in the game! You will be surprised with boss fights, cheating Drinks and a lot of nice MSX1 handpixeled graphics! Cool

Try ye luck o' dice, Gringos!

I recorded some videos during the creation of the game graphics. They show how I draw the game characters "Calamiti Cate" and "Sgt. Pepper" in Screen 2 using Multipaint. The 3rd video shows the different stages in the creation of the Saloon Screen.

A great game but the ending is bad. I get 300 prize money, reach level 11 and then RESET. I played the game with BlueMSX. Is that the reason?

@black hawk: We are currently preparing an updated version that addresses all issues we got reported in the past weeks - including the crash with the ending - as well as all texts being reviewed by a native English speaker. Will post the link here when it's online.

Hope you have a save code for that last level Big smile
Kudos on beating the game! Were the CPU players too weak?

Thank you for the information. Then I'm happy that there will be another ending. The CPU players weren't weak, they were really good. I only saved after every game I won ;-)

A new version of the game is available (which also fixes the broken ending).

You can always find the latest version and list of changes in our Github repo. A permalink has been added to the bottom of the official MSXDEV site (see "Relevant link" at the top of this post).
If you are new to Github, look for the section "Releases" at the right site and click it. Look for the topmost entry (22-11-05), then open "Assets" below the changelog and download the ZIP file (DICED.-.Tournament.v1.12.zip)

Old in-game save codes are compatible with this new version.

tfh will be updated in the next days (or hours). The main menu will show the version 1.12 in the lower left corner.

You overestimate my personal life. I have none. tfh was already updated when you wrote this message ;-)

LOL! Oh, that was fast!

And just found a bug in this version: It shows the version number 1.2, but it is 1.12. Really Wink

That is good news. But I have to start all over again because I saved the CPU status with blueMSX. Question: You can enter a password, but where can I get it? The instructions don't say anything about it or I'm too blind or too stupid... Sad

Neither blind nor too stupid - I recognized that it's not described in the manual LOL!
(That's why you should let someone else write the manual, who has NOT been playing the game for months already...).

So here is how to get the save code:

When you are in the tournament selection screen (where it says "Choose a tournament or Trg2 to return to menu"), press Trigger 2 (or ESC or BS) to return to the main menu. Once there is something to save (e.g. after you won your first non-tutorial tournament), two new options will be there: "Continue" and "Save game".
Choose "Continue" to go back to the tournament selection screen from where you left (or after "loading" a valid code).

@black hawk:
About the save state: If you saved after each match, you could try to score 0 points in the last boss match, trying to get a lower total score than the boss. This would bring you back to the tournament selection screen (and you would also lose all your money). From there, you can go back to the main menu and get a save code that you can use with the new version. Unless, of course, you saved the state after each roll and have only one roll to win, but hey, that would be cheating Wink

Thank you Mi-Chi and DefDanny for sharing those wonderful 'making-of' documents. I love reading/watching that kind of technical stuff, and for me (imho) DICED is the best game of the competition. I wish you the best of luck!

Mi-Chi, just a small question: Do you plan on releasing the actual sources for the game on Github, or are you going to use Github only as a storage space for the releases?
After that impressive 'Making of' blogpost I'm sure a lot of people would like to see the actual implementation.

I have to admit that DICED is indeed the most polished MSX1 entry of this years MSXdev contest. (Although I lost way too much time with some other great MSX1 titles as 'Shadow Switcher','Randoom','Space Cat','Bounce Mania', 'Balloon Buster' and 'Bufonada' Big smile Running Naked in a Field of Flowers )

For now, the repo is just a place to publish releases.
We have further plans with the game on a different platform, but had indeed planned to release the sources after that for entertainment reasons. Or educational LOL!
