Hi, this week I finally bit the dust and bought an MSX2 again. It's been 32 years since I parted from my beloved NMS8245, but we needed the money for an Amiga (you know how those things go...). The last couply of years I build a respective collection of retro-consoles and computers. The last one missing was an MSX. And here is it, I bought me an NMS8250, and it's in pretty good condition! In fact this is the same model my father had. We (the kids) started with an 8220, then my father got an 8250, and then we got an 8245 with 256KB RAM, which played most megarom pirate-copies.

Now there's the crux. Obviously I can't buy the games I had as a kid anymore. A lot were copies, and the cartridges we had are rediculous expensive now. I am planning to buy a Carnivore2, as it seems to be an excelent piece of hardware, but it's out of stock everywhere. I see most people prefer MFR SCC SD 512, but that's out of stock everywhere as well and it doesn't include FM-PAC which I'd really like to have. Any opinions on those two are welcome as well as a side-quest Smile

I consider to expand the memory to 256KB or 512KB, seems not to difficult to do. But that's not done yet either. So until I expanded my machine, I'd like to play some of my childhood memories. We used to play some (Konami) megarom games on my dad's unexpanded 8250 back in the day. For example Firebird (Hinotori, with slowdowns), Metal Gear (with massive slowdowns), Vampire Killer, Penguin Adventure etc. It seems we had versions of those games, different of whatever I can find in Tosec, a mirror of MEP that I have, a mirror of funet and what I can find on the file-hunter site. For example Pengiun adventure, I can for the love of fairydust not find a version that runs on a 128KB MSX, while I am 100% sure we used to play that. I vividly remember me sitting in our parent's attick where the 8250 was, playing Penguin Adventure.

So, until some Carnivore2 or similar arrives, is there anyone with a hint to get my nostalgic flowing?

Did you try to buy the Carnivore 2 at Maxiol? Last thing I heard is that he still sells them.

Good one, I can try. I read here and there they don't respond, email addresses had changed and things like that. But it won't hurt to try.

I have excellent experience with Maxiol. The carnivore 2 is a very nice piece of hardware.

For sure. Actually one can play Penguin Adventure even in an MSX 1 with 64 Kb of RAM. I mean, I've just done that Smile
It's amazing to see such a game running on a MSX 1!

Carnivore 2 is great, since it includes so many things, from extra RAM to SCC.
RBSC has also the 2MB Multimapper FlashROM cartridge, that you can re-write several times with several mappers available. No extra RAM or SCC, though. Much cheaper also!
Unfortunately it also suffers from the FPGA shortage nowadays, I'm afraid. I was lucky to get one from MSX Calamar when I visited Barcelona recently.

With the 2048K sound cartridge + SDMMR 1024K you will have an equivalent to the MFR+SD for about the same price.

But the SDMMR is out of stock... And if I go that route, personally I'd prefer the MFR+SCC to save a slot. But I'd miss on the FM sound which is a very welcome bonus in the Carnivore. I read about clone PACs but I couldn't find it. But anyway another consideration on the list :D

hehe sure if you use the cartridge or have means to run the ROM. The game itself is a 128K megarom, so that'll never fit in 64K and have RAM spare to run.
