Some while ago, we reported about a nice looking shooter in the making, by Kitmaker. Today, it's finally here! If you like fast paced, "bullet hell" action, then this one is for you.

Looks like a great shooter! But did I miss something? I didn't hear any sound effects... in a shooter??

Generally in this (type of) game:
Draw bullets, retreat, draw bullets, retreat, rinse & repeat.
During "bombardements", only move when it's really necessary, so you'll know where your player is, instead, keep an eye on all the bullet patterns.
That's the best advice I can give you. Wink

I don't know if it's okay for me, as a co-organizer of this contest, to give any "help", but now you guys still have the time to improve on stuff, and I'm not part of the jury anyway Smile, here goes:

(1) Why is your power reset at the start of a new stage? I hope this will change.
(2) Respect for getting that much bullets on the screen in an MSX1 game, but please try to minimize the slow-downs.
(3) Fix the typo "DEFESIVE", and some other typos to gain more "Polish" points.
(4) The music is good. But some extra modulation/vibration in some parts of it, especially the lead/melody would be beneficial, I think. To give it a bit more 'zest'. As far as I've heard now, there's no "vibrato" anywhere.

I committed that sin with "LEDA", remember? Smile

Mainly because the available RAM was already full with the engine and the music data and replayer.
But as ARTRAG said, in this case, sound effects will probably be added in the final version.

I would also ask for two color enemies. A black outline would greatly improve the general look of the game.

Wow what a great game! Smooth game play. Indeed missing sound effects. Only thing I personally dislike is the poor 'Wing Warriors'-intro logo, but hey... next too that this is a master piece! Very good graphics. You can see there is put a lot of effort in it for creating, designing and programming this game. Congratulations Kitmaker team! Thank you for this great MSX game!! Superrr! Smile Cool

Here's some feedback after some quick testing:

- Graphics: Beautiful backgrounds and portraits, specially if seen with the TMS palette
- Gameplay: very fun! Needs some polishing here and there, but it's really good.
- Music: Feels a bit flat and mechanic. Lacks a bit of a soul.
- Other: there are many speed fluctuations, specially if you play the game at 60Hz. In this case there are spikes of slowness or very fast movement. In 50Hz this effect isn't so noticeable, probably because the game was developed in Spain. The English texts also need some polishing.
- Turbo support: passed. Maybe it's a good idea to enable the turbo if the CHGCPU function is present on BIOS.
- vdp_access_test: failed. Too few cycles in many addresses
- AcidTest1: passed
- AcidTest2: failed

Now here's a suggestion for all MSXdev developers: Please specify in the manual what is the frame rate that your game was targeted at: 60Hz or 50Hz.

Wasn't AcidTest2 about direct access to the vdp?

Yipeee! New games for my good old MSX1. Congratulations! As far as I've played it's amazing. I'm enjoying like If would be 10 years old! The graphics are SUPERB! Gameplay feels great. There are millions of bullets on screen!! Really, it looks like an amazing game.

I really hope the soundtrack is as good as the rest!!

Developing games like this is the true core of the MSX community. Thanks a lot!!

Yes. I think the 'trouble' is more in the arrangement than in the composition itself (which is at points quite catchy and pleasant).
Adding some frequency modulation, and some more 'attack' in the envelope of especially the bassline 'instruments' and maybe even sneak in some incidental percussion (whether noise-based or not) at points where one of the channels is idle (or just as well may be) would make a huge difference.
But I don't know if that's possible with the music software/replayer they're using.
I hope Kitmaker will disclose which tools they used to make this. It might be interesting.

Suggestion for improvement.
Change border color only when player gets hit, not the enemies.
For feedback on enemies damage the enemy sprite could change color.
It's kind of the standard in shmup games.

Recollectiing the possible improvements:
- sfx
- reduce slowdown on NTSC machines and improve the flickering
- add two color enemies and powerup
- flashing borders when player gets hit
- more frequency modulation for the music

Not a good idea. A MSX1 game should be just "MSX1 targeted" and that's it. I mean, the game should be optimized to run in the worst scenario possible (in this case it's 60 Hz machines, presumable the developer put too much stuff in the interrupt routine).

Sorry, maybe I didn't express the idea properly. Yes, the game must run properly in any MSX1 machine regardless of the frame rate. What I meant is that all games are developed with a given frame rate in mind. If you run 60Hz games on 50Hz they will run 16.6% slower, making them easier. And the oposite is also true: if you run 50Hz games at 60Hz they will run 20% faster, making them much harder. Not only this, but also the complete mood change that this causes on the soundtrack.

So, to have the best possible experience, I always like to play the games at their intended video frequency. For Japanese games it is always 60Hz, and for old European games it was always 50Hz. But newer European games sometimes are targeted at 60Hz so that's why I'm asking.

When I was playing the game the last period of time I was wondering how many stages / levels this MSX DEV entry would have... well I ended the game and it has 3 stages / levels. So 3 bosses to defeat. Hope the cartridge release (if it will be released on cartridge) will have more stages / levels.

Did take a look at the website and on personal note it was a hard time reading the content.
I guess purple is not really my colour.
