MSX playthroughs on World of Longplays

MRC user KdL pointed us to the MSX section of the site World of Longplays. World of Longplays is a site dedicated to archiving longplays; a video playthrough of a computer game with the intent of completing it as fully as possible. This is mostly done for the purposes of nostalgia and preservation; using a video as a walkthrough is a secondary goal.

World of Longplays currently features videos of most of the Nemesis series, Aleste and Fantasm Soldier Valis, but also has a playthrough of the Laserdisc game Starfighters. Currently there are just 9 playthrough videos, mostly by American MSX fans, but users can sign up for free and add their own longplays as long as they follow the submission requirements.

The idea is nice, but the requirements are cumbersome.

Quote:

This would require me to re-encode the videos coming out of openMSX to a lossy format. :/

Furthermore, files need to be uploaded using FTP and the videos require an overlay advertising their website:

While I could automate this through command line tools, I think such hard-overlays are ugly and useless. :/

Finally, apparently they re-upload those videos using their own YouTube account, which is silly too. Not only can it lead to their own YouTube account being terminated/locked due to copyright claims (which has already happened), I also don't like the idea of someone else taking the credit for the work I put into creating a longplay.

When I first heard about it I thought it was just going to be a place where you could list information about games + links to existing longplay recordings of each game, and only *optionally* allow original videos to be uploaded.

Also, trying to register failed at first for me due to improper checking of input vars (rejecting + signs in e-mailaddress, giving an error 500 on having double quotes in 'real name' field).

Long story short: imho the site has too many restrictions and I lost confidence in the security/functionality of the site.

Furthermore, I think it's silly that the YouTube account still has "Recorded Amiga Games | World of Longplays" as name, while Amiga no longer is their only target.

I love the idea (just look at the various longplays I've already done), but don't like the execution. ;-)

yeah I was gonna say... I'm getting more and more Konami/SME infringements every day because of my documentation of these historic video games.... so I'm not sure how long I can maintain my account in good standing with Youtube.

I'm re-recording a few old breakthroughs (while playing them again) because of the low audio video quality they had in the beginning.

I know Konami is a company and that companies are supposed to make money, but this I find very depressing. Sad

I sometimes get some automated youtube mailes like that as well from the music business. Got a great stack of bootlegs there. It never goes further than this automated mail. If yours is the same as mine, there's no need to bother.
