MSXdev’18 #12 - XRacing

As the deadline of this years MSXdev challenge is closing in, at February 14th 2019, the game XRacing has been made final and submitted to the challenge. Santi Ontañón, winner of the previous edition’s MSX Classic category with Xspelunker, returns to the contest with a fun mix of arcade and simulation. Here is a top-down racing game for you MSX lovers, buckle up!

XRacing is an arcade-simulation racing game where you play the role of a driver trying to become Formula 1 world champion. To achieve your goal, you will have to first prove you are worthy of driving in Formula 1 though! Before you can compete in Formula 1, you will have to play through two previous seasons: stock cars and endurance cars. Each season being harder than the previous one as your car gets faster and faster, and it's harder to control. You will also have to manage your cash, as you will have to pay entry fees to every race, and also you will have to save money to buy better cars. Luckily, you have an agent that represents you and can give you some advise.

In the category "MSX Classic", MSXdev uses strict rules: pure MSX magic, no expansions of any kind, just a first generation MSX as it was conceived. XRacing falls into that category - Native MSX graphics, sound and processing, all stuffed in ROM format, the game is 100% compatible with this MSX configuration.

MSXdev is alive since 2003 and has given us nothing but solid gems so far. And this year is no difference, as up to 12 entries have been submitted already. Check out the games archive found on the MSXdev web-site.
