Kai Magazine has been working on Sector 88, a new MSX game which is soon to be released.

The game will be released in the following formats:

  • Digital (ROM file to flash it in a flash cartridge)
  • Digital (Loose files for installation on any mass storage device such as a hard disk, sd, micro-SD, compact flash, etc.
  • Physical, in 3.5” Diskettes to be installed on a mass storage device such as a hard disk, sd, micro-SD, compact flash, etc.
  • Physical, micro-SD cards / SD to be executed directly into a card reader for MSX, or to be installed in your usual card.
  • Physical ROM cartridge

According to the makers, it is an experimental game where hardware sprites and pre-rendered graphics are uses. The MSX hardware sprites are hand drawn on MSX, while the per-rendered gfx are made on a PC and converted to MSX, retouched and processed. The soundtrack is mainly composed by John Hassink, supporting various MSX sound chips.

Looks awesome! Just one note, though: unless I'm totally mistaken, I'm pretty sure it's OPL4, not OLP4.

Everything else looks really badass, though, and I can't wait to add that box to my shelf and pop that game into my machine. ;)

Sector 88 for msx2 was released a few days ago and it is available as of now. Since I was overwhelmed by the large amount of messages I received this last days I did not had the time to release a promotional video since it took me days to capture the gameplay and edit the video. Finally it is here (the video is recorded at 60 fps so please watch it directly on youtube):
promo video
The game has 11 missions, 10 visual stages (graphic novel style) 3 endings depending on your choices, 10 visual stages which will reveal a deep story, freedom to upgrade your ship at will, freedom to replay any mission as many times as you want to earn more money, epic boss fights, and a lot more.
Everything in a 2048k rom. It was originally 1024k but since the game suffered delays due to several factors (cartridge shortage, problems with the musics, etc) we used this extra month to add lots of extra contents. It is a huge game with many hours of fun in it.
The digital version is available since the day it was released. The cartridge version will take a copule of weeks more, but since there is a global cartridge shortage (we have been 3 months without any) we will only have a very limited amount since most of the cartridges we will recieve are for those who already did the pre-order long ago. So, if you are interested in this game, you should order it as soon as possible.
You can order by writting at us at: kennethalbero@hotmail.com
The digital version (rom or installable files for mass storage devices) is 12 euro and the cartridge version is 42 euro.
I hope you like it!
