Japanese software company SmileBoom, makers of the Petit Computer BASIC programming environment for Nintendo DSi handhelds, have announced the launch of SmileBasic for the Nintendo 3DS.

According to SmileBoom, "SmileBASIC is (...) specifically tailored for Nintendo 3DS. BASIC has been a very popular programming language for the beginners since the early days of the personal computer era. SmileBASIC is designed to be much easier and simpler than any other modern programming languages."

They also claim that "SmileBASIC comes to Nintendo 3DS with 3D viewing support. It should be a unique programming platform in the world to program 3D easier than ever! Also, you can utilize data in your program from the built-in accelerometer, gyro-sensor, microphone and the circle pad.

Other promised features include a large library of preloaded "design chips" (graphic elements such as sprites and backgrounds), sound effects and BGM's, built-in command reference, context-sensitive help, sample programs, and cloud-based program storage and sharing services.

SmileBasic is scheduled for release on the online Nintendo Shop by Spring 2015. Pricing information is not yet available.

This has been available for download for Japanese 3DS since the end of last year, for 1000 Yen.
Spring 2015 is for north America I think.

Well, yes, but the news refers specifically to the version localized for English-speaking users – which I believe will be of interest to most.

No hard feelings, but can someone explain, how this is MSX related?

None had. I thought the news of a BASIC programming environment being launched to a Japanese hardware platform might be of interest to MSX users, even if it didn't concern the MSX specifically. It's similar to why, when other platforms get remakes or sequels of classical MSX game franchises, these are also reported here.

Ok, now I took a look of the links and I start to realize what part of brain can put developing environment of 3D-accelerated games for 32bit gaming console to same category with MSX. Just reading the post... it sounded like posting about windmills would be just as close as you can link them to both hardware and Netherlands.

How ever it seems that this is not a typical VisualBASIC clone after all. It might be that developers of SmileBASIC have actually used MSX in the past. The posting just mentioned things like accelerometer and gyro-sensor, but not sprites or PSG

I apologize. I thought mentioning SmileBasic is a BASIC environment for game programming would be enough for anyone to connect the dots. Apparently I was wrong.

Seems no worse than inputting Basic programs on a ZX Spectrum Smile.
