Japanese software company SmileBoom, makers of the Petit Computer BASIC programming environment for Nintendo DSi handhelds, have announced the launch of SmileBasic for the Nintendo 3DS.
According to SmileBoom, "SmileBASIC is (...) specifically tailored for Nintendo 3DS. BASIC has been a very popular programming language for the beginners since the early days of the personal computer era. SmileBASIC is designed to be much easier and simpler than any other modern programming languages."
They also claim that "SmileBASIC comes to Nintendo 3DS with 3D viewing support. It should be a unique programming platform in the world to program 3D easier than ever! Also, you can utilize data in your program from the built-in accelerometer, gyro-sensor, microphone and the circle pad.
Other promised features include a large library of preloaded "design chips" (graphic elements such as sprites and backgrounds), sound effects and BGM's, built-in command reference, context-sensitive help, sample programs, and cloud-based program storage and sharing services.
SmileBasic is scheduled for release on the online Nintendo Shop by Spring 2015. Pricing information is not yet available.
