Virgil's Purgatory EX released for MSX

A fresh new game for our MSX machines was released! It's an enhanced version of the same title released for ZX Spectrum last year by Amaweks Games. Step into the circles of Hell in this imaginative and unique game.

As a fallen soul who's literally lost his head, you're to navigate Purgatory, all the while platforming, finding clues and items, talking to characters and... taking out enemies by hurling your cursed skull at them!

Virgil's Purgatory by Amaweks Games harbours an intriguing dark atmosphere, as it was inspired by Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, but also Brazilian northeast folk literature (Literatura de Cordel), the history of "Cangaço" and woodcut art.
It was awarded by Planeta Sinclair for being the "Best Portuguese-Brazilian Game For ZX Spectrum of 2021"

Some key features:

About 30 minutes of full gameplay, even when speedrunning
Metroidvania gameplay with platform and action elements
English and Portuguese versions

MSX Extra content:

New graphic details and updated level design
Illustrated title screen
MSX2 compatible palette and both 50hz as well as 60hz versions
4 more music tracks (making it 8 in total)
2 new areas
Extra final boss battle

We have to thank the AGD forun user jltursan that made the MSX compiler for MPAGD, so all games I do for ZX in that engine I can port to MSX too (and in some cases enhance it, since 48kb cartridges hold more compressed information compared to 48k tapes). I intend to do more games for both ZX and MSX very soon. And thanks everyone that supports and like my games

Nice game! I purchased it for MSX. Love the GFX theme. Only having difficulty shooting precisely with the head

Very nice game, I love this kind of graphics, it feels like you are really in the Purgatory.

The head shooting is the difficulty part, it needs some strategy before trowing the head. You can ain pressing down+fire for a short range trow and up+fire for a highter long range attack. Master the head trow is the key for this game, cause the enemies have simple patterns, the difficult is on the head

Thanks! The graphics where intend to do just that Lots of inspirations for this one, mostly woodcut art (old hand made printing technic) and a bit of Sin City comic book visuals too.

Just an aware: the screenshots on the media browser here are from the ZX Spectrum Version. MSX version has another palette, and have more background details, check it out on game page from itchio or my site.

It reminds me of souls keeper and Zombie Calavera in mechanics, settings and feeling, but it's has its own style. Nice one!

Finished it! Really enjoyed it. I even made my own map with graph paper.
Great atmosphere, fun gameplay. Hard but not frustrating.
And I really enjoy platformers, of course I'd like it
