Oktober 20th and 21st there was a big DIY expo in an old cable factory in Helsinki, Finland. MRC user Nyyrikki got interviewed by reporter Mikko of Viiksipojat while demonstrating MSX in general and also a thing we had not seen before: A Pong robot.
Because most of us were not paying too much attention at Finnish class, we found a Fin who was willing to translate the interview. Here's a transscription of that very interview:
Mikko: Mikko from Viiksipojat, who are you?
Nyyrikki: Hello, I'm Nyyrikki.
Mikko: Are you responsible for this robot arm?
Nyyrikki: I guess you can call me guilty. I don't know... We built it with Ahti.
Mikko: Is it invincible?
Nyyrikki: Of course not. That wouldn't be fun at all.
Mikko: I think it would be OK. "Robot supremacy, human, acknowledge." But I understand.
Nyyrikki: Yeah, the entertainment value would be low in that case.
Mikko: True. What is this MSX?
Nyyrikki: This is an 8-bit home computer standard, so when the PC hadn't yet conquered the world, we still had other computers. Back then, the manufacturers had this idea that "hey, it wouldn't be a bad idea if other manufacturers' computers could run the same software" and thus all kinds of Casios and Panasonics and Spectra videos and Philipses started making compatible computers and this kind of a standard was created.
Mikko: Why is it still interesting?
Nyyrikki: I don't know. There's something... maybe because the hardware has been made by so many manufacturers and it's been standardized and thus all the hobbyists have made their own modifications and there's always something new coming up... You can be excited like "hey, I can get this computer to the internet" or such... something's interesting about it. I can't clearly say what it is but why would you change it if you've fallen in love with it?
Mikko: That's right. Do you wanna send your regards to anyone? Home to your mother or something?
Nyyrikki: Yeah... Is this going to the TV or the radio?
Mikko: Goes straight to TV.
Nyyrikki: Well, let's say hi to my mom then because she doesn't even have a TV.
Mikko: OK, thank you, bye.
Nyyrikki: Bye
