ASCII has closed the pre order of the One Chip MSX computer, which they started on May 20th 2005. From the beginning, it was clear that 5000 pre orders were necessary in order to actually start producing the new machine. We have kept track on the pre order status on the ASCII One Chip MSX information page and according to this tracking, they have received about 3400 pre orders, not near the required 5000.
There is something interesting going on, though. Right now, there is a statement on the ASCII One Chip MSX information page which reads they have closed the pre order but in the order figures, orders placed by companies and schools are not yet included. If we understand correctly, these pre orders still have to be added to the total number of pre orders. Bazix is still taking pre orders until August 20th 2005, 23:59h CET. Although parts of their pre orders were already added to the ASCII counter, there still are some pre orders from Bazix as well which have to be added to the total figures.
The statement on the ASCII One Chip MSX information page also reads there will be made public more detailed information in the near future. We also await further information by other involved organizations such as Bazix and MSX Association. With this new information, we certainly haven't given up hope!
