French MSX user J-War started in 1999 to remake all music and jingles contained in Konami's Solid Snake - Metal Gear 2. At the time, he painstakingly retrieved every note from the game tunes and jingles and then proceeded to arrange all tracks. Unfortunately, a few weeks later, his HDD crashed and he lost everything.

Or so he thought... Last month, while at his aunt's place, he discovered a dusty, scratchy CD labeled "MG2". It was the last work in progress record he had made before his HDD crashed 13 years ago! Using modern technology, he ripped the CD and restored the tracks. And now he submitted the entire album to the MSX Resource Center for you all to enjoy!

J-War’s MSX Metal Gear 2 arranged soundtrack

Because the album contains a lot of songs, we have also bundled the songs into a single download for your convenience:
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (entire album)

Our download database contains over 1.100 different free MSX downloads. If you have created MSX software or songs like this that can be freely redistributed, please do share it with the visitors of the MSX Resource Center by submitting it to our downloads database. Maybe next month your software or music will grace the top 10 charts!

Woei Smile

I recently found the teaser MP3 J-War made to promote this project, years ago. Very cool to finally have this soundtrack after all these years!

Wow, that's some enormous list of very nice MetalGear musics.
Although you mentioning that that it's not as you might like it to be, i'm glad that you where able to recover at least this much ! I'm at track number five at the moment, but I like what i'm hearing, good job Big smile

To be exact, i am a bit frustrated while listening to some tracks, just because they are more "rough sketches" of what they could have been. Zanzibar breeze (opening BGM 2) is a good example. Like several orchestral songs with a lots of instruments.

That goes for 99% of the guitar parts as well. In most cases : Only one take, mono with crappy sound, no panning. I hadn't time to record the final takes and take care of the sound so it's powerful and pleasant to hear.

That's all for the negative part... In the end i REALY enjoy listening to the whole thing. In fact i listen to this soundtrack several times a day, which means it's overaly above satisfying to me ! Big smile

Of course it's quite a feeling to master something that's 13 years old ! Especialy when you thought it was lost forever...

I am very very very very very proud to release it finaly.

[EDIT] Thank to Wolf_ and MRC for hosting the files and for the neat image with a MG2 CD Backup LOL !

Fast forward to 2012 I'm still listening to MSX tunes. This time re-arranged and as MP3 on my smart-phone.

so, nothing changed really Smile Running Naked in a Field of Flowers

J-War how about providing a hacked emulator that plays this music instead of SCC? ;D

SD Snatcher as a game is my all time favorite, same goes for its soundtrack.
It's definitely something i would love to do ! Trust me, at least once a year i think about it. I think i'll do it someday.
It's a more difficult task than MG2 tho... which means more time... Which i don't have...

This is the true reason why i kept asking some log to ".mid " (with tempo) function in OpenMSX or other emulators aiming for perfection.

I'd rather like arranging whole soundtracks than single tunes. Such a function could greatly reduce the overall time needed as i don't have much.

I would *love* working on something like a true PC remake, or some project like Knightmare gold.
In this case, i would even start over from scratches to ensure providing the best audio material possible.

Anyway, thank you all for the nice comments.

Awesome J-War. : )

I've been a fan of your music for awhile now ever since I heard your Quarth, Xak, Golvellius and Snatcher arrangements. Nice to finally hear some new work and it was an interesting story to read in the readme file behind the scenes of what happened. Very glad you found this after so many years!

You only know the difference about before and after but don't worry about that, for us the songs are and will be as they are now, great. Thank you for this big collection Wink
