Recently, MRC webmaster JohnHassink spent his time on making a large video walkthrough of one of his favorite MSX games: Fantasm Soldier Valis II, by Telenet. This MSX2 action platformer is famous for its multilayers (though at the cost of smooth movement), music, outstanding graphics and slight adult content. JohnHassink just uploaded the complete walkthrough to YouTube for us to enjoy. It's everything you could wish for: six acts, seven cinematic demos, bonus material, and an English introduction text for each video enabling us to follow the story. Watching Yuko versus Object has never been this easy!

PSG SFX are terrible

I think exactly the same. Smile
PSG is too loud; the sound seems to be developed on a machine with relatively low PSG volume.

By the way, the PSG drums were used just to have 9 channels FM-PAC instead of 6.
It's a choice which has pros and cons, but Telenet just went for shutting off the FM drumset over the entire soundtrack.
Probably partly due to the fact that it was their first (and last) game using FM-PAC.

If you dislike the PSG part of the MSX game, just use something like the FM Sound Stereo for disabling the PSG output ...

I think that if someone plug a Snatcher SCC into some cartridge port, it seems to change the sound balance too!

When using openMSX, you can tune the volume of the PSG in the machine by editing the hardware configuration file a bit (search for the volume tag). Or just turn the volume of PSG down manually using the volume setting of that chip.

Note that the game engine used for Valis II reminded me of Core Dump. But I doubt Cas was inspired by Valis II for his games.

manuel, is it possible to record from openMSX with maintaining the sound settings?
I'm almost certain it's possible, but I fail @ doing so.

I love fmpac mixed with psg, imho it adds so much more to the standard fm pac sound. Therefore Valis II was no exception. Love the PSG drums infact, it had more "impact" than the standard fmpac drums imho. Also Xak II music I loved very much.

DemonSeed: what exactly do you mean? Wouter says: "the video should have the same sound like what's being played .. so all sound settings should be applied to it". This does not go for recordings of the record_channels command, those are pure original sound only, on native chip frequency.

The Brazilian FM-Sound Stereo has a switch to enable PSG output ... There was a ads telling about the use of the hardware with games like Valis II , Fray and others!

That is a very handy feature. I would have liked to have that 'back in the days'.

You could, with a mixer... FM-PAC routed to one channel and complete MSX to the other...
