Today Imanok is pleased to announce the release of a new game called SHMUP! Kai, an enhanced and extended version of his earlier production SHMUP! which ranked 3rd in the MSXdev'13 competition. This means that we will enjoy an improved version for both MSX1 and MSX2 computers with a catchy PSG soundtrack! Can you destroy the enemy forces before they launch their attack?

SHMUP! Kai requires an MSX1 or higher computer with a minimum of 16kB RAM. The game is already available at the MSX Cartridge Shop in two different formats:

  • Physical Cartridge edition: 29 €
  • Digital ROM edition: 14 €

I'll describe the improvements to the MSXDev version a bit, so that you can you can get the idea about how much the original game has been changed:

-New title screen and animation.
-Added a cool intro sequence.
-Implemented a dual graphic engine, so the core running the game is the same in both MSX1 and MSX2 modes, but the graphic engine gets addapted to the machine. The MSX1 mode uses screen 1 and single sprites, while the MSX2 mode uses screen 4 and double sprites.
-Added a new smooth scrolling layer, so there are currently 5 of them.
-Added 3 extra stages to the game, so there are 3 new bosses (the final one is huge) and some new enemies (20 different enemies in total).
-All stage graphics have been redesigned, so every stage has it's own graphical environment.
-Many new musics. Every stage has it's own theme. Fantastic OST by John Hassink, by the way! Wink
-New ending sequence.
-Added a hidden boss mode.

And all this crafted into a 64Kb rom (the size growed x4).

If you liked the original SHMUP!, you'll love SHMUP!Kai Wink

Some gameplay, in case you didn't watch it:

Stage1 - MSX2 mode gameplay

Stage2 - MSX1 mode gameplay

it is nice to see sometimes a game that does not claim to be an msx2 game when it only redefine the palette.
(it is not much effort to claim msx 2 game only doing a bunch of out in the 0x9a port)
great work

Cartridge arrived today in a lovely box with insert card/mini-manual, it's a great production! Also confirmed that the digital purchases and cartridge purchases both get you identical software, so openmsx players using the digital-only purchase aren't missing out on any game content

@Gloriou: Willing to watch your video Wink

@Gig71: Thanks! I thought many MSX lovers who don't have a real MSX would purchase the digital version, but I guess I was wrong Question

Maybe is better to to say when a digital version is available too.
When i saw Available on msx cartridge shop I thought "damn another game only on cartridge that I can't enjoy !"
But i was curious to see and with my surprise was available in digital version too.
So I bought it.
I think it would be better to provide both, digital and physical copy, and make it clear this option is available.
thanks again for providing this option !
