Don't forget that in the 90s Spain was strictly a MSX2 development country. So I don't believe regionality explains it.

@ syn: It's probably the challenge, yes. But to be honest, I adore MSXdev, but I fail to understand the point to limitations such as maximum ROM size.

I dont know the exact reasoning behind the restrictions of the older editions, but the current MSXdev' xx strict rom-size restriction was set to make the coexisence possible of the 2 contests: MSXdev'xx for games within a certain limit, and basically anything goes for the #msxdev Compo xxxx.

@ TheSpecialist: That's true, but I understood that in countries such as Brazil, MSX2 was pretty much a rare (expensive) novelty. Which would explain their nostalgia to be more MSX1 orientated.

@ syn: Well, I would say, MSX1 is a restiction enough as it is, to still maintain the distinction.

I guess that's why they made MSX2 to MSX2+ upgrade kits in Brazil? :S

I presume MSXDev’s MSX1 restriction makes sure games are kept simple and finished in time. That’s why there are 18 submissions, rather than 3 or 4, and the success rate of those submissions is high.

already seen this, the msx scene has proved to be oriented to msx1 generation even for games not possible on msx1 at a decent level. So does not worth the effort.

Aww, that’s a lame excuse! Smile The popularity of the MSXDev competition may give this impression, but I don’t think it’s true. At least I bet most Dutchies prefer MSX2, in the Dutch 90s scene the MSX1 was nearly forgotten.

Anyway I don’t disagree with the basic premise of what you say, I think software sprites are cool and useful in certain situations. But what I was trying to subtly imply is, if you think it’s great then show it! “Put your code where your mouth is”, or something Smile. It’s easy to criticise games and developers if you don’t show how it should be done yourself! It will be a more positive end result.

Nowadays all the MSX1 games have Konami quality graphics and sometimes more than that.

Most people agree that many MSX1 games can compete with MSX2 graphics easily.

How many MSX'ers didn't originally think Nemesis 2 was a MSX2 game?

Well, sure, those guys are tech-savvy, but I understood that in the '80s, MSX2 machines were rarily seen. There was some kit to upgrade your MSX to MSX2 back then, but it's said to have been very expensive as well.

turboR's and MoonSound were also rarily seen in the 80s...

It means conditions change.

But about Brazil, I was under the impression that a lot of (recent) MSX2 remakes came from there.

Indeed, I don't think I've ever seen a Moonsound in the '80s. Wink But MSX2 was launched in 1986.
And yes, they're making some MSX2 remakes there now, that's true. Also, the translations of Snatcher and (the unfortunate) Illusion City. And great sites like these, ofcourse.

@ Grauw: That's a good point, but I do think that if the ROM size rules would've been more lenient, even more entries may had come up. It's extremely restrictive and quite a hassle.
