More good news! I have recently bought a "Tronex Amazing 72+ Science Workshop" and built 5 of the 72 circuits listed, as well as a set of "helping hands" to help me solder. I think this means I will able to build an MSX2 computer by myself before Spring starts on 21-03-15. I may have to buy each chip separately, because someone told me that kits such as http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Design-your-own-Homebrew-Z80-DIY-Z... are no good. If I can't build an MSX2 computer myself, then I could get the money together to buy one by making and selling floppy drive emulators which use SD cards. I don't know if it's possible to get a device like this working on an MSX1 computer, because it may have to plug into a cartridge port, like the Megaflash ROM.

Creating you own MSX (or even floppy drive emulator for that matter) is _far_ more expensive than buying one.
Even a flight to Nijmegen in februari and buying an MSX there would be cheaper than building one yourself, it is also a lot faster Smile

I've build the GR8BIT and nowind, I assure you, there is no money to be made Smile There _is_ however a lot of fun and learning to be had !

Making a whole MSX2 is very very very expensive but here is what I can tell you. You will not have it finished in 2015. Rather expect 2016. Keep in mind that what you are about to do is enormously labour expensive and will tear you in pieces. You will need willpower beyond imagination and some tools as well. Think in logic probes, scopes, good well calibrated DVM's well established soldering skills but still the most important of all. Willpower. Ohw yeah, did I allready mention willpower. A huge undertaking of doing this will get on your nerves and nobody will take you seriously so you are practicly on your own and if you have no experience in insane projects you will propably go under with this one. I am telling you this because I have done these crazy things and I keep doing them over and over again and while I love to see people do the same things I still warn them not to. Unless you are really really really sure about this and you are sure about yourself to never give up on anything go ahead, if there is even the slightest doubt in your mind about this right now, just send bas an email and order and MSX2 and save yourself from the horrible suffer you are planning to undertake.

Unfortunately, at €369 there's no way I could afford it. The site even says "net of shipping and fees", so I think that means the €369 isn't even the total price. I could afford to spend more than that so long as it wasn't in one lump sum, though.

OK, in that case I'll have to buy an MSX2 computer. Unfortunately, I really want one which has a separate keyboard, instead of the "doorstop" type style of most 8 bit computers. I don't know how much it would cost me to get to Nijmegen or what other expenses would be involved, except getting a passport for £80 (€100.10).

I'm afraid I don't know what you mean by "nowind".

Of course, there is money to be made by making small devices to upgrade some classic computers, or to create new versions of these computers, but creating an MSX floppy drive emulator may be too expensive. There's already the Megacartridge SCC, or whatever it's called.

In the near future, I hope to make a useful device such as a camera which transmits a video signal to me of my electricity and gas meters which are outside my flat.

OK, I get the point! I don't understand what logic probes or scopes actually do. I don't even know what DWMs are. I may have forgotten everything I knew about soldering, because I found out I was unable to solder some wires onto a joystick style plug at a recent repairs workshop. All I did was bare or strip a wire, then make a mess. I've just bought a soldering accessory called "helping hands", which I hope will enable me to do some soldering after I watch some more videos about soldering. I've read some details of upgrading an MSX1 to MSX2, but hardly any MSX1 computers have a separate keyboard, anyway. Also, the very common Toshiba HX10, which probably sold more units in the UK than any other MSX computer, has a different VDP, although this would have to be replaced for an upgrade. I wonder if it has any other slight variations from the MSX standard. It may cost more in the long run to upgrade an MSX1 computer to MSX2, but all I care about is that I don't have to pay more than about €100 at a time. This means for example that if I bought an MSX1 computer for €70, then after that for example, I bought a V9938 for €20, and at the same time or later I buy some MSX2 system ROMs for another €20, as well as another piece of equipment later on for €40, then this would be better for me than paying €100 for an MSX2 computer, because I didn't have to pay more than about €100 all at once, plus I'd get a sense of achievement from doing the upgrade.

So basicly you need an MSX2 for 100 euro. Well thats simple. You need a NMS8250 it has everything you need. Separate keyboard. floppy drive is MSX2 lots of built in RAM and because a lot have been made they are readily available thus fairly cheap. Now lets say you just happen to say "ok I can miss just a little extra above the 100 euro" you can have that particular machine shipped to your place if you contact Bas. Then you will need more stuff like megaflashrom etc but you can pay for that later.

And I am sure that there are sellers that you can pay in advance per month if you like to split the costs over two months. You pay half first then half again and he sends it to you who knows.

I tried to buy an 8250 from Bas, but he said he didn't have any at that moment and offered me another model (8245?) which is "doorstop" style for a total of €100. This means that an 8250 from him would cost a lot more than €100, because it's heavier. After this news from Bas, I don't know if I can buy an MSX2 from him, unless I settle for one which is "doorstop" style instead of "pizza box" style with a separate keyboard. If I could pay in 2 or 3 instalments for an 8250 or similar from anyone, then it would be different. Of course, I don't actually "need" a Megaflashrom. Most MSX2 computers have floppy drive interfaces built in, so it's possible to attach another floppy drive emulator to one of these interfaces, which may be Shugart. It doesn't have to be a Megaflashrom. Why do you think I "need" a Megaflashrom?
