Ratiofix!, the tool to calibrate your monitor, has been updated to v2.0. Ratiofix! is based on Philips PM5544 television test pattern, a world wide used generator for television. With this generated test-pattern you can adjust your television/monitor settings for perfect horizontal and vertical stretch and color.

This is a fully new version that works in two modes

  • SCREEN5 for MSX2 systems
  • SCREEN10/11 for MSX2+ systems

The television test pattern was improved to get a perfect circle in NTSC mode.

You can find RatioFix!v2 on KdL his homepage, or use the direct link

I would add a note about msx1 screen:

On msx, pixel are not square, the ratio is 7/5, so the best resolution to see msx screen on LCD should be

1792 x 960 (256*7 x 192*5)

with this res we have 7 Horizontal pixel for 1 msx Horizontal pixel and 5 Vertical pixel to for 1 msx Vertical pixel.
I think this is a good value for emulators and fit good for FHD res (1920 x 1080)

So, I ask to emulators developer to include this res (1792 x 960) as a choice.
Think about this res can also minimize the output for emulation due the easy rescale factor and you can use 1 of the 5 vertical pixel to simulate scanlines.

Do you mean on 60Hz (NTSC, PAL-M) or 50Hz (PAL/most PAL derivatives/SECAM)?

I'm sure of 7/5 ratio pixel about european msx.

On one old TV a SVI-738 displayed a rather "widescreen" 2:1 image Smile The first L!T demos (all PAL) were made based on fMSX's square pixels, but the end result was definitely squashed. Later I've used an estimate of 5:3 for the visible area of the screen, as opposed to 4:3, but that's just a guesstimate.

The 1.4 value (7/5) is not estimated!
This is the default value for european msx.
Look this Guide
at pag 133.
There's also other manuals that report this value.

But where does that number come from? And is it even uniform across different MSXs?

Ookkay, I set my video monitor so that the MSX image borders barely fit inside the frame. At least on a Canon V-20 that 7/5 pixel aspect ratio seems to be very close to the output (the measured image is only 2% narrower than it "should" be). In terms of a 4:3 monitor the SCREEN 2 addressable picture aspect ratio is then around 5.6:3. Almost the same as a modern 16:9 widescreen Smile

As a sidenote, even with the maximum distortion (set horizontal_stretch 256) openMSX still shows a narrower image than the real Canon V-20: 256x192 pixels' ratio is about 1.66 as opposed to 1.866.
