Mmmmm... We don't have too much mass (or speed, distance, acceleration) data in the games' intros on MSX, but we could approximate the ships's speed in pixels/seconds units.
Also, the ships are usually jumping immediately from a "rest speed" (0 pixels / s) to their maximum speed (no real acceleration or inertia, except in some games like Transball or Elite...). That beeing said, if we could approximate the size of 1 pixel in meters (taking for example the buidlings size in Aleste), and check how much pixels per frame the ship is moving, we could compute the initial acceleration of the ship in m/s².
I remember that some people estimated the acceleration or speed of Santa Claus so that he could travel the whole world and deliver Chrstimas gifts in one night, the result was astronomic
Whatever the outcome. The Penguin from Penguin Adventure (what his name again ) Is the fastest being in the universe. I remember I've calculated that dude's speed once and it was rediculous deluxe

Hilarious hahahaha... But seriously, what is the standard for measuring this? 50/60Hz, what machine config?
Aleste makes a good candidate, Space Manbow is not.

Based on game map and instruction manual, Pentaro can cross the whole Antartic continent in more or less one hour (yeah, something like the speed of a jet fighter ). He does not look so fast on the screen.
Also, the max speed of the Aleste ship is not the same horizontally and vertically : during the fast vertical scroll scenes, the ships has an amazing vertical speed (maybe 32 pixels / frame) !

Then Pentaro is the fastest pet / animal of the MSX universe...

Good point. But... How we could compute the speed in Gradius/Salamander saga? Because those space ships "travel" between planets in... seconds?

I think they have 2 ways of moving: one for fight and one for interstellar travel. Like the Aleste ship at the end of a level that goes through some "hyper-space" mode.
This is hard! First I naturally thought a ship from Pleasure Hearts as it goes so fast that at some point your eyes start to hurt, but thinking again... This is nothing if we compare the speed ie. with ship from Zone Terra, Daiva or Elite! I can't really tell.
For the French speakers here, there's an interesting astrophysicist named Roland Lehoucq that gives (serious) physics courses using movies and science fiction.
Here are some links:
Faire de la physique avec Interstellar
Faire de la physique avec StarWars
Did you know that the power of a lightsabre in StarWars (that you can hold in your pocket) is equal to the one of a full-power nuclear power plant ?

But... The start of stages in Parodius/Gradius/Salamander is "fight mode" or "interstellar travel"? Because you defeat the stage boss and, automatically, you are in the "next" planet. Hmm...
I don't know if aleste/aleste2 ship has "hyper-space" mode. Because we never can see the ship in the deep space... Really are the stages of Aleste planets... or different zones of the same planet?
