Please excuse me if this has been asked in a post before, but...

what would you consider to be the best year for MSX when it comes to games?

My vote would be 1990.
The year that gave us Bubble Bobble, Dragon Slayer VI, Fray, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Rune Worth, Quarth, SD Snatcher, XAK 2...

Come to think of it... wouldn't that have been the best year for games, period?

For me that would be 1986, the year we got our first MSX computer, a vg8235. If that didn't happen, I'm not sure I'd even know what MSX is... Maybe I wouldn't even be interested in computers at all... So yes, 1986 for sure.

1984 i switched from C64 to MSX, so I got best of both worlds: Elite, Antarctic Adventure, Athletic Land, in fact nearly every game was a new experience. I remember my daily visit in computer stores and a trip to a electronic fair. A friend of mine got a Coleco, so there was hardly to say which system was best. It was a great time. Like 2017/18.

+1

It was probably the best year. And the last for Konami with MSX. I would have liked that they had stayed a bit longer with MSX (till 1992).

By the way, Bubble Bobble is from 1987.

Ah, then what was the entry at Generation-MSX? https://www.generation-msx.nl/software/clover/bubble-bobble/...
Later re-release, perhaps?

#EDIT: I see: a Korean re-release. So Bubble Bobble is off the list. Still, 1990's it for me. :P

Yes, anyway many other good games were released that year: Columns, Fray, Famicle Parodic 2, Rune Worth, Rune Master II, Seed of Dragon (first TurboR game!), etc.

Plus the MSX was still alive in Europe!

Like with movies those days, there used to be a little gap between games were officially released (in Japan or the US) and when the game became available in other parts of the world (legal or copies). So, for me my experiences are not really about the exact release years, but to years when I was able to play them.

Anyway, 1990 was a fantastic year indeed. Besides mentioned games, I'd mention Randar 3.

I have to go for 1987 though. Games of that year paved the way for others, and might have been the full breakthrough of Konami with Metal Gear, The Maze of Galious, F1 Spirit, Salamander and Treasure of Usas. Other personal favorites are Golvellius, Xanadu, Matchday II, Super Runner, Auf Wiedersehen Monty and (of course) Ys 1.
