Did you try to enable the tas mode? set mode tas

It's far from the same, but maybe helpful. There are also scripts that convert a replay into a text file with a similar layout.

Yeah, TAS mode is reasonably helpful. I'll have to experiment those scripts sometime; might be useful for copying segments between recordings, at least.

Oh, one little thing about TAS mode, while I'm thinking about it... The "go back one frame" button (Scroll Lock by default) seems to be kind of finicky for me. Sometimes it jumps way back to near the beginning of the recording for some reason. When it doesn't do that, it still makes the on-screen LEDs display for several seconds, and they get placed on top of the TAS input display, making it hard to see. Is there any way to get that cleaned up on my end? (Other than the obvious one of moving the OSD elements around.)

Also, is there a way to clear all existing inputs from the current frame? You can change the inputs by holding down new inputs as the frame advances, but I haven't found a way to set the current inputs to nothing other than truncating the recording. Would be a helpful addition to TAS mode, if it's not there somewhere already.

Yes, you can move these icons around by setting the OSD icon set, see https://openmsx.org/manual/commands.html#load_icons

I think truncating the recording is what was made for that. reverse truncatereplay I don't think there's another way.

I suppose replacing the input is effectively doing a truncatereplay anyway, so it's not that different. I should probably just map the truncatereplay command to some button.

It's nice using the piano roll interface, though, because it means you can adjust the timing of earlier inputs without having to discard later inputs. Especially when it auto-simulates up to the current frame with each edit, so you can immediately see how the adjustments earlier in the recording affect the outcome on the current frame.

Well, you can then also make a Tcl script that triggers an mp3 to play at the right moment....
