A new MSX (3?) for 2022 ?

Hello MSX fan around the world.
For me, 1st MSX in 1986 and the last MSX Turbo-R FS-A1GT in 1991.
Fan of Japan thanks to the MSX and therefore of Panasonic since 1990. Since then I have of course had other machines. PC for convenience and administration. And play with consoles especially Nintendo. I have always followed the news (here, Internet, Facebook, Japanese magazines) MSX. But I have doubts about the MSXVR. Not official, in Spain and very slow production.
For some time, there are rumors of new MSX by the famous Mr. Nishi Kazuhiko (Kaye). According to his page (Nishi.org) and the links indicated at the bottom (translate by Chrome, Google translation or others) he would like to release an MSX next spring. However, I seem to have read this often, especially at the time of the MSX Association. This would be an MSX compatible with the old ones and in 1 block (like 2+, Turbo-R ....).

Unfortunately, this would not be produced by a known Japanese company. Maybe less than 1000 Euros. Obviously from the creator of the MSX it would be more official than the MSXVR and I would be sure to buy it. For those who no longer have any software or games there would be an online download system (as you can download online games on Nintendo Switch for example). Obviously I want that but I have big doubts. I'm a little afraid that this is just an impossible dream or wish of Mr. Nishi, especially in these difficult times of production and raw materials. Do you think it would be possible for this model to be produced next year? Thank you for giving your opinion. We keep our fingers crossed and we hope.

The only person capable of defining a new MSX standard is surely Nishi. This is also a burden, because what do we expect from a computer that has been out of the race for almost thirty years? Combining past generations with new hardware should not be a problem, but where should the journey go?

I almost see parallels to the early eighties: the niches are occupied. Learning computers like Pi & Co are cheap and plentiful - retro computers like the new Spectrum, the Mega65 and also the MSXVR seem to be made precisely for us retro friends.
Nishi's MSX is late.

So Nishi has to prove his genius once more - this time it won't be easy.

The MSXVR is more of a fan group. Something like the Mega65 in MSX version with online offers for games or software would be needed. He wants something immediately usable like when you turn on an MSX (not like the PC). If Mr. Nishi says that it can be distributed in the spring of 2022, it means that the final project exists. Otherwise if nothing is fixed it might not be available so quickly

Nishi-san already said before about a FPGA R800-Z80 Hybrid for educational purposes that was meant to be ready soon and did not take off and a huge silent period until recently... So, pardon me if I take Nishi-san words with a pinch of salt... And I wholeheartdly agree with hamlet, PI's and similar already fit the bill for educational or low cost and they are insanely capable for something that costs what a PI costs...

It will be a tall order to make something cheaper that will drive away attention from the PI, so, even if it comes from Nishi or MSX Association, most likely will be like what you called, a fan group work, that won't sell much more than a few thousand, perhaps in the four digits count if Japan likes it and have it easily accessible for a reasonable price, but don't expect anything expensive to sell a lot, don't expect anything cheap to fit the bill to what a lot of people expect or to do more things than a Raspberry PI can do...

About PI, there are so many single board computers that can't compete with PI simply because if its following/community. A newcomer would have a hard day in that environment.
I don't see anything come from Nishi's brewery, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

I agree that would be very low sales. But I would rather put money in there than the MSXVR. The project seems complete and advanced with a download system. If he gives so much information and it doesn't happen, he loses credibility. Hopefully good news in the next few months, and I will buy it without any hesitation if it becomes available next year.

I don't see clear evidence of a real MSX3, all the info that Nishi is providing is quite confusing. The last time that Nishi talked about an MSX revival he launched MSXPlayer and a mediocre emulator.

Right now for me the most interesting project in the MSX world is SX2, that has the genius HRA working on it.

The last time Nishi launched the 1chipMSX right. I think that’s been a pretty transformative development for MSX. So although I’m not expecting anything, also because really there is little that we know yet, I’m still curious what it will be. Who knows it could be something pretty cool, or it could be something that’s aimed at a completely different audience than me.

I understand your opinions and positions. I do not reflect the average. It would suffice for a Japanese brand to officially release a mediocre device or for Mr. Nishi's to be bad, I would take it anyway ... Many fans have not kept MSX material since the 90s and play with File -Hunter on PC or Android. So the idea of a download system for games or software would be good. (Like the Switch for example). I would also like an entire system (like an MSX Turbo-R or MSXVR rather than the SX2 style.

When he visited Tilburg he was promoting the “MSX revival” with the 1chipMSX, touting the FPGA as a spiritual successor of the MSX-ENGINE SOC approach, so I can’t see how he was not involved. Of course he didn’t design it and didn’t build it, but he established the environment that made it possible to have commercial production, and I’m assuming he was involved in bringing ESE and D4 together, along with additional projects such as the new MSX Magazine issues, MSX PLAYer, Project EGG, Bazix, etc.
