Are there plans for new SymboOS release?

Right now we are in SymbS 3.0 are there plan for new feature release? Are there plans to make SymbS standalone like Windows 7 and up where it doesn't start from DOS? If someone want to use CF or SD and partition their own card to install SymbS alone away from DOS limitation, it would be great if it can be done? Will it support longer filenames (since it skip the DOS all together). Can we have ability to have our own profile where we login to enter the system, add ability to protect our folders from being opened, support gfx for higher resolution and more colors?

We need more SymbS games and applications for MSX! Like seriously!! Can we be able to use opfxsd but in GUI system in SymbS supporting up to 4 MB ROM size? I am hoping this will be my main MSX system and skip MM and SofaRUN or DOS or even BASIC. Seeing I can use BASIC inside SymbS and able to code in full or window screen and listen to audio while doing.

I want as soon as I turn my MSX....bam it boots to SymbS. Can I be able to mount as my many MSX .dsk images and have it boot directly from SymbS and use 1-9 to switch disks while playing the game?

You guys are seeing where I am headed...right?

Well, SymbOS is mostly Predatron's work and most of its source code is closed, so you better talk directly to him as most of your requests can be only done by him.

But in msx.org looking at a person's profile does not give me an option to PM that person. So seeing his profile and what he posted holds no benefit to me. I assume he reads posts in forums anyways, so I am hoping I already got his attention with this post.

Maybe i can give you some inside information about the status of SymbOS as i'm one of the members of the Symbiosis team. SymbOS 3.0 was the latest stable release and already released a time ago. Currently Prodatron is working on the 3.1 package. And this is almost in the final stage. The 3.1 version will contain new device drivers, drivers fixing, bug fixing and will have some new features. For example it will be able to run the email client for SymbOS. Also the v9990 game mode is compatible with the 3.1 package. (Like the G9k Flappy Bird example)

We are also planning to release SymbOS 3.1 on disk as well. Currently we are orientating for this.

You have a big wish list and most of them are not that easy as you think. Remember that the MSX machine boots from a ROM not from a disk. This could be a BASIC ROM or DISK ROM. The DISK ROM or mass storage device is searching for NEXTOR/DOS boot files, and yes, they could be replaced but why do this as you need MSXDOS to setup things as well. Most people like to run SymbOS next to MSXDOS and like to install it.

SymbOS support 16 colors and the higher and lower resolutions on the MSX and G9K. Disk protection was never implemented in FAT.. so i doubt it. About user profiles.. that is a funny idea. It should be possible as all settings are stored in files, which could be unique for each user.. but do you have multiple MSX users at home?

I agree! If you like to program your own i suggest you to use the Quigs development suite.

Can the SymbOS disk be write protected forever...like CD you can only read into?

You can probably edit MSXDOS2.SYS / NEXTOR.SYS with a hex editor and replace the COMMAND2.COM filename with SYM.COM to make it boot straight into SymbOS… Although you can also just as well put it in the AUTOEXEC.BAT.

Hey edoz, does SymbOS 3.1 support WiFi? I want to buy BadCat WiFi cartridge, will it work with SymbOS?

But I just want to confirm if it is possible.
