Whats up guys. I know this is my very 1st post and that might be frowned upon. For that i do apologize but im not new to helping people out on forums and various other places when it comes to repairing video game consoles. I dont know what kind of community this is as this is my first time visiting here but i know nothing about the MSX and i happen to find one that needs some serious help. I really need your help on this one. I will use the search function to figure out how the system even works but i know lots of things are missing entirely and thats where i need your help...

Things I Do Know
--------------------
MSX Kicks ASS
My MSX is missing the FDD
It Powers On
Has 2 Cart Slots

Things I Dont Know
----------------------
What the FDD is for?
Where to find a full replacement
If the Cart Slots Works (i have no games)

Ill show you pics of what we are working with... I appreciate anyone help on this matter

img526.imageshack.us/img526/3296/dscn3311j.jpg

img42.imageshack.us/img42/2874/dscn3316t.jpg

I dont know if i need the FDD to play cart games or of the cart slots work... i dont even know why there are 2 slots.... But I do know it turns on so theres hope for this beast...

Again thanks to anyone who is willing to help in any way.

Grrreat and sexy machine!. The F1XD and its red drive holder is a real MSX beauty!

Now the answers (well, sort of...)

1) What the FDD is for?

To load floppy games or simply to work with the machine without the sloppy tape interface.

2) Where to find a full replacement

Japan most probably. It's a machine sold mainly in Japan and a real replacement is hard to find out of this county. The good news are the MSX drive interface is compatible with more or less rewiring work with the PC drives; so it can be replaced with a PC one (again, with a bit of work). You can also drop the drive and go for the multiple storage solutions like the SD card readers, CF card readers, USB interfaces, IDE interfaces, etc that are available out there. MSX world is plenty of storage solutions .Sadly if you want a full and classic MSX experience, you'll finally to work out that drive.

3) If the Cart Slots Works (i have no games)

Most probably, yes. Just in case, get some contact cleaner spray and clean the contacts with a toothbrush, then go to eBay right now and get some Konami carts like "The Treasure of Usas", "Metal Gear", "The Maze of Galious", "Penguin Adventure" or any of the titles of the Nemesis/Gradius saga and enjoy Smile

thanks jtursan for the info.... so your saying if i get a cart game i dont need the floppy to run it? how do you load a cart game does it just autoplay like the nes for example or do you need to run a command... If i grab a 34 pin floppy from work can i just hook up the connectors and thats all?

does the floppy even matter like is the good games all on carts? this was given to me from a friend saying it needs repairs but he didnt tell me whats wrong with it...

why are there 2 cart slots?

Thanks again man...

Hello,bogard85.I'm fukenko

why are there 2 cart slots?

To use "LARS18TH" command on Gradius2 with Q-bert or BACK-UP with Galious...sorry,It's just a joke.Tongue

Cart slots are not only for running the game but also for the hardware extension. Many hardware can be connected MSX by using those slots such as external FDD and HDD,KONAMI's SCC sound cart,FM-PAC,MIDI cart and so on.

then go to eBay right now and get some Konami carts

Don't forget "SPACE MANBOW" and "Metal Gear 2 Solid snake"! ...though those are much expensive...Crying

It's as fukenko said, the slots can be used to put in extension carts for things like sound or graphics, too.
For example, you can have a game in slot 1 and a sound extension in slot 2, so the game you're playing will use the extra soundchip while running.

eBay ofcourse has cheap MSX cartridges (epecially ones without package), but you could also try on the Trading and Collecting section of the forum:

Game cartridges auto-boot, so you don't need a disk for them. Some other cartridges don't have a main program, but provide various extensions (the FM-PAC adds an FM music chip, etc.) The FDD is for disk-based games and MSX-DOS, basically.

I have the same machine, though I haven't had to look into replacing the disk drive. One thing I would like to know is whether it can be easily replaced with a 1.44MB drive for extra storage space...

Shipping from Japan is actually surprisingly fast, if a bit pricey, so I wouldn't rule that out. Otherwise, it looks like the cheapest game selling from North America is a copy or Hyper Rally.

Bogard85: We had mail-contact.

Yes I have replacement drives. But you need the bottom-plate and the eject-button.
