I just got Princess Maker today and I tried running it on my MSX2 but it seems that any place were there should be text displayed, there's just a white bar instead. This also happened with a Princess Maker demo disk that I had a while ago, but I just thought that it was part of the demo and wouldn't be in the real game. I remember this also happening in a demo on one of the Disc Station disks too. Does anyone know why this is happening? Is there something wrong with my MSX? I have a lot of other text-heavy RPGs and stuff and it's never happened with any of them.

Because you are using a european MSX2 without japanese characters on special ROM banks (JIS-I and JIS-II). That's why you get a white bar.

This game was designed to be used in a japanese MSX2 or higher. If you boot it in any original MSX2+ or Turbo-R, you will see all the texts for sure.

Or any Japanese MSX2 system for that matter. It would be a nice idea to have the JIS ROMs in a cartridge.

I thought that Princess Maker came in 2 versions. One which needed the JIS-roms but I heard that some people did find a version which doesn't need it.
The english translation of Teo Lopez was I think based on the second version.
Or am I wrong ?

Yeah... There's a hack around there somewhere that was translated. I don't know if it uses the JIS ROM's though. Apart from that, the most commonly available version of that translation has a problem on disk 3 or 4 iirc.

I'm using a Japanese Yahama YIS-604/128 MSX2. Maybe Yahama computers don't support this?

Looks like it's a simple MSX-2 without Kanji roms.

Did they ever make a ROM cartridge or expansion that you could use to display the Kanji/Kana text correctly?
