I would think that people that support the Pirate Party would be more inclined to do their own research, instead of blindly following the establishment of manipulative characters that try very hard to remain in power.
I would think that people that support the Pirate Party would be more against censorship and against banning helpful and knowledgeable people from communities.
I suppose the fact that nothing here has changed is reassuring in a way, but for the most part it is so very very sad...

At least you have all means to defend yourself on this platform - unfettered, uncensored, and rightly so. So do.
Personally I'm very sympathetic towards the Pirate Party & their goals. But the problem with a single-issue party is you only have 1 vote, and -like most people- I consider other issues more important than the issues they stand for. For example income inequality, how much (or little!) cooperation within Europe is good for the NL, how to curb future healthcare costs, etc, etc, etc.
I don't know where (or even if) they stand on those issues, which to me reads: they might 'shout loud' when their issues come along (and likely wouldn't make a difference, being a very small party), and remain silent or vote the wrong way when important issues are on the table. And besides Patriek none of the candidates on their list rings any bell whatsoever.
With established parties I know where they stand on those important issues, I've seen some on their list in action a number of times, etc.
If you would get 100 points to distribute over a # of parties of your choice, chances are I'd drop some points on them too. Unfortunately that's not how elections work.
They'll probably get some votes, and some voters might pick them as an anti-vote in a "none of the above" style choice. But I guess I need to see them actually make changes once or twice - then I might vote for them in future elections. Either that, or come up with a complete program on those other issues too. And present themselves in a much more professional manner. And include some more experienced politicians in their ranks. Much of which I don't see them doing any time soon...
These elections are about three things:
- jobs
- the economy (includes medical insurance, taxes, food prices, VAT etc.)
- the European Union
That's a kinda inner circle. A ring around this circle contains:
- immigration problems
- retirement + the elderly
- education
- nature, animals
The standpoints of this pirate party are not on society's agenda. Why?
- Because they don't require a political party to regulate them. The modern generation perfectly knows how to deal with meanies (the record industry and some others), they are annoying in the media, but no one feels bothered by them. I mean, they tried everything. Fighting the development of mp3-players in the 90's, including low-quality mp3 files on commercial CD's to convince people that mp3's are always bad, punishing old ladies who had grandchildren download some mp3's on their PC's, punishing people for hundreds o' thousands o' dollars for downloading a few songs in a P2P-tool for which they didn't even know that downloading means sharing, adding silly reminders before a film (on an authentic DVD!) starts, annoying hosting companies etc. etc. the list goes on forever. Yet, here we are today.. if I'd want to download some latest album, I'd probably have it in while I'm making my lunch. So, all the measurements don't work. And why don't they work? Because the people are always technically two steps ahead of government legislation and copyright organisations. Which points out exactly why people don't need a political party dealing with this. Other points from their standpoints: neutral expression in the media. Which is fine, especially in countries where free/neutral speech isn't guaranteed (think of some middle Eastern countries). Yet there are networks like Tor, so again: it doesn't matter how mean a government is, the people are always two steps ahead. They'll find a way, life finds a way. And you don't really need a political party for that, it'll happen just because it happens, it's because people are inventive and creative. Other points on their list have (imho) more to do with businesses than with politics (of which regular voters probably don't know cheese), and are certainly not points a party with one or no seats could make any difference in.
"It's the economy, stupid"
A famous line, and not for nothing. I think there won't be any PP seats in NL when the voting is over.
It being a one issue party with no offencive points, makes it a good blind/protest vote party.
Me being such a voter when all established parties seem to lie more every year (or me just noticing it more), picked the PP just because of the name of one member: Bas Grasmaijer, not what they stand for... And this lucky vote, along with others who voted them as a protest and the narrow minded people who voted for them because their one issue is what they really believe in, didn't get them one single seat.
So your vote was lost, and all parliament decisions are made by other people than the person or party you voted for. IMHO that's about the same as people who don't vote at all because they're fed up with politics - and then bitch about politicians doing the wrong things.
Point is with a vote you hand out power. Not much, but it does count. I agree that politicians can be a bunch of lying bastards, but still I prefer the law-making power to be held by party X rather than party Y. The lesser of evils is still better than the worst of evils.
Vote for a person or party if you want to see them in parliament. Vote for some other party than XYZ if you feel they are the worst of the lot. Don't vote if you think the rest of your countrymen will do a better job at steering the ship. Vote strategically if you think that will help put the right folks in parliament. But don't complain everything goes to hell after putting in a 'random' vote...
I think there won't be any PP seats in NL when the voting is over.
Hehe, I wouldn't be surprised if they get a seat... or 2.. Remember the Partij voor de Dieren? You have to start somewhere.
I do not agree that my vote was lost.
If I didn't vote, my vote would go to the biggest party, while on this way, it didn't.
So I got all the right to bitch at the parties in government this way.

But animals are a group of creatures who need some kind of governmental legislation. Who's to say the PvdD got entirely new voters? Perhaps their voters were disappointed GL voters. Either way, nature and animals are at least subjects which people can identify with. How many not-so-tech people can identify with the PP? The tech people who would potentially understand the PP's stand points can manage on their own, as I pointed out. In other words, imho it's a political party which has no relevance these days. Maybe in the future, but not now. Because: "It's the economy, stupid!"
adding silly reminders before a film (on an authentic DVD!) starts
I really, really, hate that. I buy a film, and first I have to watch 5 minutes of what are almost accusations.
And you can't even skip those parts. They practically force us to download the AVI!!!!
