I connected a gotek/flashfloppy drive to my vg8235/20 external drive port with a straight 34pin cable. I did only put a jumper on S1, and then the 8235 will see that drive as double sided drive. Works perfect:-) I found also some old code from NYYRIKKI which he had a routine that would to patch #4010 routine in Disk-ROM. Haven't come so far yet to test it, because it needs to be compiled and that is something I haven't done before.

For the complete picture: your 8235 is still unmodded? single sided original diskdrive/rom?

Yes, the 8235 is still unmodded, if only replaced the floppy drive belt once. So I hope that patch will work so I do not have to change the rom.

How did you power the drive tho?

I just used an old PC power supply. Google which pins you need to connect to start the PSU.

You can "steal" a power lead from an ATX PSU and solder it into the 8235 and lead it outside near the ext fdd connector. There's 5V, 12V and GND available there.
If you don't know where to find the right voltages, someone might be able point you there. I'd take 'em from the same place as where the internal FDD gets it from, but maybe there are better points near the PSU.
At least I would not get an external PSU for an FDD(emulator). There's enough power inside the computer.

You only need 5v for Gotek. you could easily rig a USB cable to do the job.

Hello!

Sorry to up such old topic, but I also a Philips 8235 and I'm trying to use one External Gotek Floppy drive, but I have no idea of how to make this work.

My Philips 8235 as never been oppened, I plug PC floppy drive cabe and a Goteck, but how do I adress that external drive to see its files and to boot games from it?

The internal drive will always be drive A:, so it needs to be disconnected first. Also you need to supply power to the Gotek drive, since the FDD connector doesn't provide this. And finally, without updating the diskrom, you can only use single sided disks.

Apart from that it's perfectly possible. I have it working on my 8235/00 this way, though I want to move the Gotek drive inside when I have time.

Yes the goteck as it's own power brick, and using a regular cable, I read on this topic that the external drive is 720k.

If I disable the internal then the Philips will read the External floppy on boot and play the games? In this case the Goteck with MSX DSk files.
