The idea started here, and I suggest to use that poll thread to discuss MSXdev'09 (and/or earlier editions, as far as they are relevant). In this thread I'd like to invite as many developers as possible to give us some backgrounds on their motivations. So, have you ever made a game, demo or utility in the last, say, 5 years, then read on!
Why have you done what you have done, and/or why haven't you done what you wanted to do?
The answer you'll be giving (hopefully without pain) is yours to make, but to give you a hint of the sort of answers I'm looking for, I've put some ideas below:
You have released a game, demo or utility because:
- You were competing in a challenge or contest
- You wanted to prove your 1337 skillz on some technique or artwork
- You develop things on a structural base anyway, so once in a while you simply have something to release
- Someone asked you to join a development team
- A specific contest or challenge was just suitable for you
- You like all the attention you get from the community (you're on the beach in a bikini, while standing on your hands.. get the point? :P)
You have not released a game, demo or utility because:
- You are a solitary MSX fan who doesn't have the complete set of relevant skills and you're really missing team members filling up those gaps
- You are just lazy and passive :P
- You miss certain tools
- A specific contest or challenge didn't suit your taste
- You don't like the community reception of your output (e.g. you don't like it when people don't like your output, and thus you stop developing)
Anyway, these are just examples. If you have another reason: let's hear 'em! And let as many developers tune in here.
Note: to get a bit of an idea of the current community activity, this question is obviously for developers, or at least for people who have the potential to develop. If for you HELLO WORLD is still a mystery, your graphics equal VDP errors and your music scares your neighbors away for 4 blocks, then this thread isn't for you.. :P
