The idea started here, and I suggest to use that poll thread to discuss MSXdev'09 (and/or earlier editions, as far as they are relevant). In this thread I'd like to invite as many developers as possible to give us some backgrounds on their motivations. So, have you ever made a game, demo or utility in the last, say, 5 years, then read on!

Why have you done what you have done, and/or why haven't you done what you wanted to do?

The answer you'll be giving (hopefully without pain) is yours to make, but to give you a hint of the sort of answers I'm looking for, I've put some ideas below:

You have released a game, demo or utility because:
- You were competing in a challenge or contest
- You wanted to prove your 1337 skillz on some technique or artwork
- You develop things on a structural base anyway, so once in a while you simply have something to release
- Someone asked you to join a development team
- A specific contest or challenge was just suitable for you
- You like all the attention you get from the community (you're on the beach in a bikini, while standing on your hands.. get the point? :P)

You have not released a game, demo or utility because:
- You are a solitary MSX fan who doesn't have the complete set of relevant skills and you're really missing team members filling up those gaps
- You are just lazy and passive :P
- You miss certain tools
- A specific contest or challenge didn't suit your taste
- You don't like the community reception of your output (e.g. you don't like it when people don't like your output, and thus you stop developing)

Anyway, these are just examples. If you have another reason: let's hear 'em! And let as many developers tune in here.

Note: to get a bit of an idea of the current community activity, this question is obviously for developers, or at least for people who have the potential to develop. If for you HELLO WORLD is still a mystery, your graphics equal VDP errors and your music scares your neighbors away for 4 blocks, then this thread isn't for you.. :P

I do it because I love coding on MSX... even if I never (public) release anything else, I'll still be coding and doing stuff, and showing it to friends. In a matter of fact, I am doing this since last year...

Besides my MSX love, I also like to see how some games would look on MSX, specially the ones I like. I still have quite a list of games to make, some original, some ports (written from scratch), and as time permits, I keep developing them;

Too bad (actually it should be "too good" heh), this year I dont have any time free for the next months... I'm actually developing a government funded educational project (a game for PCs Tongue), so spare time during this period will be next to zilt Smile

Anyway, I wont participate on any contest; I dont like having deadlines, size, formats or any kind of limitation on my "fun" projects (besides the target machine specs, that is), and I think the contests should attract new developers for MSX, as MSXDev did very well all these years. Unless the prize is something really tempting (and I'm pretty happy with the MSX gear I have), I'll leave contests to the newcomers Smile

I love coding for the MSX in Z80 machine code ... I always did since I learned it 23 years ago. For me, it's like a mind exercise puzzle, like a logical challenge, a Sudoku or a Rubik's cube. Rodnay Zacks book on Z80 is like a bible to me Tongue

I've been trying to develop a MSX2 game for the last 2 years, and got so far as a demo, but basically I lack two things :

- Time : I work hard, I have a family and another hobby (restoring an old american car), so finding time to develop on MSX is not very easy.
- Skills : Basically, I am a good coder, but it stops there. I do not have the necessary skills when it comes to music and GFX. I tried to build a team, and found a GFX designer but he had the same time restriction as I have, so in the end, we got nowhere.

Contests are not for me, as deadlines are not compatible with my time restrictions. And I'm not in this hobby to win something, but rather to give something to the community.

I'm porting Age of Empires to MSX1. But I'll never ever show to anyone except my beloved friends neither I'll publish it on any contest because I don't like any kind of limitations. Including "moral" ones. I LIKE TO BREAK FREE!

I just thought of new poll!

Guess muffie's age:
- 8
- 9
- 10
- 12

I thought of including higher numbers, but it I didn't want it to be too unrealistic.

Well, ok. But looks like everything related to MSX brings me back to the age that I had when I had my first MSX. You're right: 10!
