Maggoo has updated his website, adding the AudioWave #3 music disk to the downloads section. Furthermore, a new section about unreleased projects is opened. It contains some (very) old IOD and Abyss projects that were never finished, previously unreleased Dandan music from the game Total Parody and much more.

Nice pictures..very nice pictures...damm..cannot wait until I get home to try the downloads Smile

Maggoo:

Why is the MKid game never finished?

It looks that the only things missing (I only saw the pictures) are:

- Graphics
- Music
- game level editor
- someone to create new levels

There should be enough talented people here to help, or is it not possible to finish te game?

Ivke:

The game level editor does exists (it works on PC), I'll upload it later on that page.

It was never finished because we missed:

* Someone to make GFX (in screen 11=pain in the *** to make).
* Someone to make music.
* Someone to create new levels (and edit enemies positions, moves).

...erh and lots motivation too Smile The playability is not all that great either, it's a bit outdated now.

oh yeah, and someone to finish and create end of level "Boss", there's just those two at the moment.

If you got energy to spare, the code is even available for download Smile

'Someone to make GFX (in screen 11=pain in the *** to make).'

Is it not possible to make the graphics on PC (true color) and then convert them to screen 11?

'The playability is not all that great either, it's a bit outdated now.'

Too bad..

'If you got energy to spare, the code is even available for download'

Well..I'm a IT-er (even programmers education) like a lot of people here (I think), but the only thing I can do on MSX is: Basic programming and add up two integers in assembly Wink
But even my Basic is rusty...last basic programming done in 1993 or so..
So I cannot be of any help Smile

Maybe sometime in the future ...at the 40th anniversary of MSX Wink or when I have the time/motivation to learn some decent programming skills for MSX.

I think there are enough ppl out here willing to help creating levels, music and gfx.
I really love the promo so I hope to see a finished mkid some day!
Maybe it's a nice idea to release this game as Future Disk 4x? Tongue

And, if we can get such amazing graphics in V9958 screen modes, why should anyone go on GFX9000?

* 'Coz first it's a lot easier to devellop for it, you don't have all those contraints you get with the V9938/58.
*'Coz you can have not only nice GFX but also nice (and big) sprites moving all around. Look at the Shodow of the Beast promo, scrolling the background is ok but there is no way we could have the big massive sprites like on the Amiga with the V9958. not that it makes the game worth playing anyway Smile
* 'Coz the GFX could be even better on V9990 (imagine multiple scrolling layers)

The same goes for V9958 owners: how many games do really use all of its characteristics? How many finished games use the 19000 colours mode in the action part?

If that chip is only used to display still images and make smooth horizontal scrolling...

Perhaps a good videoadventure in V9958 special modes and in CF format could use all its potential...

The most important feature of the v9958, compared to the v9938 is the possibility to scroll horizontally, and that's what mkid uses.

The scrolling modes of the V9958 are the bomb, but the extra color modes are actually quite tricky to draw and code for. Even on the GFX9000 the modes with lesser colors/lower resolution are the most interesting to code for, as they offer other options that are much more useful (or stunning) in games and demo's.

Another reason for developing on GFX9000 is time. It's easier to reach good/cool effects on a GFX9000 than to squeeze every single bit of performance out of an V9958. If you already choose to leave the MSX1 and MSX2 VDPs behind, I'd say GFX9000 is the way to go.

One option to make games easily on GFX9000 would be to have someone port the Vscreen engine to V9990, afterall screen4 and Pmode1 are not all that different, and the way code works, I guess it would be only a matter of "out ports" and "Vram address" change and new GFX to make it work. Would have the same possibilities only more colors in the background AND the sprites.

That's an idea I've been thinking about too! It should be really easy to make a gfx9000 version of the VScreen engine but of course you won't really use all features of gfx9000 in such a case, since you can use a lot more patterns on gfx9k. Once I got the hang of programming for it, I might toy with VScreen a bit too.

How are coded the patterns on V9990 ? One or two byte ? Or is it different screen area as on screen 2 with different pattern sets ?

2 bytes per pattern (max about 15000)

Well then it's two out instead of one Smile With the speed of a V9900 and a TR it shouldn't be a problem.

BTW, I just uploaded the level editor for Mkid

maybe if someone made a cool GFX9000 game more people would be interested in buying a GFX9000. I know I would... then start codin' for it myself perhaps... and if more people do so we might have a nice amature-game scene again. Just a thought...

Jorito might want to re-read his last reaction.

Big advantage of the Gfx9000 is that you don't need to buy a whole new MSX or mod it in order to get the improved graphics. I don't have a turboR for example, and my MSX 2+ is in very bad shape and hardly usable. Although I do have a v9958 in my MSX2 Smile, but that's beside the point.

Anyways, I am a huge fan of 'double' engines as was suggested for VSCREEN among these reactions. You don't use the Gfx9000 up to its full potential, but at least you're not forcing people to send their MSX away to some hardware dude to get it fixed up with a v9958. And in some cases you might even benefit from the Gfx9000 features (such as reduced sprite flicker with >8 sprites on a line and higher framerates when using copy commands).

What? You must be kidding! I had lots of fun just by playing those demos! And the music is very good also! Big smile
