Really enjoying this game, but the save feature doesn't seem to be working (or I'm not using it correctly?). When I choose SAVE from the title screen menu, it says "OK!" without ever having accessed the disk, every time. If I then choose LOAD, it *does* access the disk, and continues my game as per normal, on the correct stage... unless I turn off or reset my MSX. If I do that, then later restart the game and choose LOAD, it just tells me there's no save data, and I'm forced to restart from stage 1.

Am I doing something wrong?

Dunno if the disk is actually used for saving. There's a PAC logo on the box. PAC is a Pana Amusement Cartridge which has some SRAM for game savings. It's in a PAC cartridge or an FM-PAC.

Afaik it saves in the clock chip. Can your msx keep time?

That's... a good question! How would I find that out?

Actually both answers are correct... FireHawk saves to PAC if one is available (up to 9 save states), but if there is no one, it will save to clock chip. (Only single save state)

Try ie.

SET DATE "17/07/2015": SET TIME "12:00:00"
(Date order may be different according to localization of your machine)
Power off/on and then
GET DATE D$:GET TIME T$:?D$,T$

go to MSX-DOS and type TIME. DATE is possible as well... Enter a time or a date, switch your MSX off, start it again, go back to DOS and type TIME again and see if it's still running on time.

You can change other stuff as well and see if it's still the same after the MSX has been turned off, try SET BEEP 2,4 and check if the beep stays that way.

All this is just to check if your battery isn't empty, since you at least have an MSX2 which supports time anyway...

Looks like my time and date are recording properly, so that wouldn't seem to be the problem. Probably is a PAC thing.

Thanks for the responses, everyone!

You can patch your Firehawk disks with the enhanced patches,
Now you can save to DISK and if you want even play the game from Flasrom-SD
Firehawk - Thexder 2: Enhanced HDD Version

Doesn't look like that would work for me -- I'm using an unmodified Japanese MSX2+, so I only have 64kb of RAM, which means MSX-DOS2 is out of the question unless I pick up a PAC or Megaflashrom or something.

...Unless it also runs on MSX-DOS 1? The FAQ is a little unclear on that. I can definitely at least give it a try after work and see.
