MSXdev’20: #11- Relevo’s Snowboarding

After giving it a quick go, I'd be surprised if this doesn't rank up there in the end results. I really like the music and after I played only the levels 1-1 and 1-2 (almost finishing the latter), the gameplay seems to be nicely interspersed with special sections (I've come across slalom poles and tricks so far).

Hey, this is the true Konami sportsgame spirit! What a nice game! by pressing and holding the space bar you get more speed (but you cannot control left or right!). And you can do tricks on the ramps! ... and there are hidden secrets (just found one by gliding between 2 trees)...

This game definitely succeeds in bringing back the Konami years. Congrats! This could have been an official Konami game and no-one would ever know!

Oh yeah, the manual that's included in the ZIP file is FANTASTIC! Also take a look at the ROM contents; there is a special message at the end.

The manual says “you can continue from the first stage of the last course you reached the last time your game was over.” However the game continues at the same stage that I failed… Is it an error in the manual or a little bug?

@Grawn: indeed it's a bug in the manual... well, kinda: earlier versions of the game just let you continue from the first stage of the last course you played, but after the testing stage we considered that perhaps it wouldn't be that fair to do so, and we changed it for the last played level. It seems that we missed on updating the manual... nothing we can't fix, thank you for reportin'!

FROSTIVAL unlocks all stages in practice mode.

Mopiranger and Popolon are secret "color styles" (actually, a different sprite) enabled by more secret passwords*
Dr.Venom and Cabagge P.Kid don't seem to have an associated secret password, so I guess they are enabled by cartridge combination (but haven't tested it yet)

* The game launched yesterday and half of the secrets have been found already... This forums really need an "spoiler" tag!

Here is the final list:

NOBIGRAZZ: lets you play as the Mopiranger character
FREQ14007: shows the BGM player
DIEHUDNOS: lets you play as the Popolon character
SNOWB18TH: activates hard mode
COOLDOCKS: shows end credits
METALIOON: secret bonus game
FROSTIVAL: unlocks all stages in practice mode

You can play as Dr.Venom by inserting the Nemesis 2 cartridge in slot 2.
You can play as a Cabagge Patch Kid by inserting the Cabbage Patch Kids cartridge in slot 2.

They printed it, folded it a bit to make it look used, and then scanned it back. Just to make it feel like an original Konami scanned manual. Amazing attention to detail!

Another little undocumented detail from Relevo's Snowboarding: once you start the game, if you hold on for some seconds and don't press any key/button in the main menu, an attract mode will appear with four recorded plays from different stages. Well, I am pretty sure all of you noticed that . But there is something more that perhaps you've missed: although the game is compatible with any MSX computer (8KB RAM), when at least 16KB are detected the first attract mode movie is replaced with a *full replay* of your latest run (if any)

How can I play this game on a vanilla VG-8235? I've got a cartridge with MSX-DOS 2.20 and use SofaROM 3.0. All other 48K entries from the MSXdev load and play properly, but when I load this game, it briefly shows a black screen and then reboots the computer. Do I have too little memory?

I have the same problem. Using SofaRun doesn't work. As I have a MegaFlashROM SCC+ SD, i used OPFXSD and it worked, but I can't find a configuration that works with SofaROM...

The entire soundtrack has been released today. IMHO this is the first game from the post-Konami-era that manages to capture the exact spirit that all made us fall in love with the MSX. Just listen to those sounds and discover their tributes to Track and Field, Penguin Adventure and many more.

The rom works perfectly when burnt into an eeprom chip, so it might have some strange routines not intended to be used as a RAM cartridge. I've tested it with my 8250.

OTOH, Sofarun under GR8NET wasn't able to load it, same behaviour as many people described: Black screen and then reset.
Will try GR8NET NETBROWSE later...

In a couple of days a new version of the game will be released, with corrections based on MSX developers and users feedback as long as some conclusions taken from this forum thread, https://msx.org/forum/msx-talk/development/best-way-to-init-..., that will increase game compatibility when disk or diferent interfaces are present or when using different loaders that run code before the game does.

Lol... The only thing missing in this game is a duo cartridge option that you get to play this with a penguin when using Antarctic adventure or penguin adventure.

But I really love the nostalgic feeling of this game. Everything is just right...

I'd like to add the game to msxhub.com like I've been doing with all the games presented since 2018: https://msxhub.com/list?search=msxdev

However the license file in the game explicitly says that redistribution is forbidden... I sent an email via the contact form in Relevo's website several days ago but I'm not sure if you received as I got no answer back...

Is it possible to get your approval so I can include in the MSXHub repository?

Ahh, I am probably one of those people! I am very sorry about that.
As all games are freely downloadable at the msxdev site, I more or less assumed it was OK to add these games to both the MSXDev section on file-hunter.com as the download section. But I guess this was a bit short sighted. Even though I did ask the MSXDev team for permission (and got it, their "demand" was a link back to the MSXDev site, logicallly...)
I've removed the files from the download section straight away. As for the playable version on the MSXDev section of my site: Is it OK if I leave it there? Or would you prefer removal over there as well?
If you have any other things you'd like me to remove, please do not hesitate to let me know! I am asking this, as I also have all the other MSXDev entries from Relevo playable in the MSXDev section.
