You know, I didn't consider VERTICALLY scrolling platformers! But if those count, then there's also Frantic. And the game Frantic was inspired by, Doki Doki Penguin Land -- though I find DDPL kind of frustrating to play, whereas there's something about Frantic that makes it a much more appealing game to me.

Darn, I completely forgot the MSX version doesn't scroll...! They could have used the Flicky engine...!

Thought of another game for this list: Super Runner. A platformer that not only scrolls, but has the distinction of scrolling separately for each player in split-screen format! Really fun, albeit difficult, game.

It started with 9 entries. Last list was 36. Now I wanted better overview, so the games entered Google Sheets. Count: 66.

Thanks for all the feedback. Gives me great insight in the genre on our platform. It's not a complete list, but maybe it is statistically "ok"?

Given the scrolling platform-style, we can see from the data that only 12% of total are smooth *horizontally* scrolling, and only 8% if you look at MSX1 alone. And then you can have a look at the quality of those games, and judge :-) People have different taste, so I won't post my opinion here. Judging a game is more than just how smooth things flow on the screen.

The single reason for me being a bit hung up in this (smooth scroll), is due to the "reputation" MSX has in this area, and the fact that this is something I always wanted to address should I make a game.

For MSX2 stats are picking up, and 26% of them are smooth horizontally scrolling. (horz specifically, as this is harder to do than vert on HW < MSX2+)

When I go through the list, I think there are some titles that just stand out in some way or another. Again, this goes into taste, but I think these are noteworthy:

  • Angelic Warrior DEVA - The pace and details swirling around on screen in this game is major achievement. (Judging from video only,) I'd like this game to have more frequent frame updates, but this game really stands out technically.
  • Ghosts 'n' Goblins (V9990) - This conversion must be the best out there, regardless of platform. Fantastic!
  • Psycho World. This is the ONLY MSX2 smooth scrolling game on the list, using setadjust, that hides jerky edges. Opinions differs of course, but my personal opinion is that combatting jerky edges is important. Combined with quite fluid gameplay, this game stands out.
  • Singular Stone. Cute action RPG. Not my favorite genre, but looking at it, it seems like an absolutely great game, and great achievement making it on our beloved platform. Now, if we could just have added smooth scrolling here Smile
  • Super Runner. It's something about this game. Splitscreen, competitive. No flickering sprites. Colorful. Blings. Something else, I think, and stands out from the crowd.
  • Iligks Episode One - Theseus. Strange game. But so different. Graphically not top 50, but it was made in 1984. Smooth scroll in any direction (although color-bleed of course). Faster screen updates than any of those spectrum ports which are doing some of the same. Not sure if it is any fun, but it got my attention.

Only if you attempt to do the horizontal scroll in the bitmap modes (screen 5 etc). There I would say it is prohibitively expensive for practical use. However, in screen 4 it is not expensive at all, nor really difficult. You need to update the name table every frame, but you would probably do that anyway. Horizontal scroll works the same way on C64.
