Hello folks, I am wondering if you could share any quick tidbits with me with regards to the venerable GR8NET? I got mine today in the mail and would like to know how I can load a sample .rom game file and run the game from the cart. Also, are there any other useful features that I should be aware of?

I understand that there is a big manual book of this great cart that I need to delve into before I make good use of it. Any help is much appreciated. Smile

This is a good starting point: when you are in MSX-Basic type CALLNETBROWSE

Hi,
There is a basic tool within the GR8NET to do an initial setup.
_NETCFG

To load a .rom I actually would suggest using Sofarun by Louthrax
Just create a Nextor FAT16 SD card (MSXDOS) and put all your roms on that together with Sofarun, the GR8NET cart has enough memory options to start anything you throw at it. Plus Sofarun can also run .DSK and .CAS in most cases.

Also do not forget the Nextor systemfiles, otherwise it won't boot correctly or not at all and you end up in MSX Basic, see here for more info on that.
:)

Does the system read .rom file zipped inside a .zip file?

Yes Sofarun will read the files inside a zipped file Wink

Probably you already know it but the manual is located here. It is continuously updated when new features are added to the cart (last addition for example is OPL4 PCM support and hw monitor). It also explains for example on how to update your firmware.

Thank you. I know the link to the manual, but I didn't know the author continuously updates the manual whenever there's a new feature.

In fact, Sofarun is just a filer.
SROM, LOADCAS and SRI are the loaders for ROM, CAS and DSK by default. Sofarun allows also to configure these loaders. You can use other loaders but Sofarun can not configure them. SUZ is used to handle the Zips.

Disk images are used also for disk games, like XAK or SD-Snatcher
Cassette images are used for the old fashioned (lol) games that were released on cassette before disks were used.

Applications, like drawing tools, Music trackers, programming IDE's etc etc are mostly on Disks and for some MSX1 things on cassettes. Roms are most of the time games or extentions like music chips, extra memory, like the GR8NET

Question: Everytime when I start my MSX, I always end up in BASIC prompt. How can I make the system always boot to DOS prompt first?
