1. The BIOS will get stuck if the RTC chip is missing, that is normal.
2. Possibly the RAM and/or VRAM are bad. If CBIOS with Knightmare works it probably is the RAM. Knightmare will only use a minimal amount of RAM.
3. Try running the MSX2 BIOS with 32kB or just 16kB RAM (it is not an official configuration but should work) if it won’t boot you can use MSX1 BIOS.
4. Try swapping the different RAM chips into different locations, you may be able to tell which one(s) are causing an issue.
Just ordered new vram and a new rtc.
The main ram is just one IC. Its a static ram chip AS6C4008 4m so 512 kb IC.
Could maybe be bad however it is a new IC from the static bag directly on the PCB.
The new vram does not change anything. The new RTC I got does not seem to work at all. At least the MSX does not seem to boot with this one installed. Maybe these ricoh IC’s are very unstable and fail very often.
From a friend I borrowed a Carnivore 2. It seems to boot perfectly. On the cf card there was a ramtest and the vram and mainram test perfectly. So the ram seems to work OK.
It also runs games and even a demo like Baltak rampage runs OK.
Running small basic programs run also ok (nestor basic).
So probably indeed the issue is somwere in the clock chip. So need to buy yet another one.
Are there maybe other test programs or ciritical games I can run to verify the functionality of the rest of the computer?
Dear All,
Today I received my third RTC. And yes it works……
I now have a fully working MSX and all the strange things are gone….
Thanks for all the tips and help.
Great to hear, congratulations!
