People who might be familiar with Yacht Club Games' other work, know that Jake "Virt" Kaufman's music is a huge contributing factor to the nostalgic vibes their retro inspired games evoke. And for their next project, a Game Boy inspired action adventure, Jake is seeking inspiration in a to us very familiar corner:

Quote:

We’re back at it again with [local neighborhood audio recluse], Jake Kaufman! The "Expanded NES" music and sound effects in Shovel Knight were all made using the free program, FamiTracker, and they can be played back on a real hardware console. For Mina the Hollower, Jake is imagining that our souped-up fantasy Game Boy supported extra sound chips of its own, and has turned to the MSX home computer and its beloved Konami SCC expansion to capture the lush, haunting sound of this chip mashup.

Mina the Hollower is up on Kickstarter right now and you can find some music samples on the KS page!

Personally, I'm just curious to know what tools Jake's using for this! Are we talking actual hardware, Trilo Tracker, MML or some other tool? Or even if it's "just" emulation or sourcing the waveforms, what is the process like and how did that translate?

So yes, those Kickstart tiers with "Exclusive Backstage music livestreams" sound very tempting. Running Naked in a Field of Flowers

From the creators of Shovel Knight! Those are a big name in indie game land. Cool!

I backed it on the Backstage Music Access tier Smile.

Does anyone know what Jake is using to make the SCC music?
There are rumors that it is TriloTracker but I seriously doubt that.

People very close to the source say it is actual TriloTracker music (perhaps some after processing). Unbelievable!!!

This is amazing. I never expected one day Jake would make MSX music. I'm looking forward to it. Running Naked in a Field of Flowers

I understood the Kickstarter page to say the music is Game Boy's audio capabilities + SCC, not the PSG on MSX + SCC?

Anyway, I wrote a quick "non-MSX hobbyist" description of SCC in relation to this Kickstarter on Destructoid cblog section. If someone wants to fact check it (there's not that much text, mostly clips to soundtracks on Youtube), it's here.

The music + sfx in the gameplay demo are 100% created on MSX specs.
