Hello total MSX n00b here so excuse my ignorance.

A long time ago I watched this video on making music with the MSX:
https://vimeo.com/50286164
..and was inspired to get one for experimenting with FM and tracking at home.

Eventually I got a secondhand Philips 8250, a music module cartridge (also a monstersound FM paq cartridge, a Toshiba HX-MU900 cartridge) and purchased a SD-512 cartridge for the purpose of installing & running the moonblaster tracking program.

Life, death, a child et cetera and a year later the hardware still sits unused here in the retro corner, until today where I've tried to get stuff working through checking out some youtube videos and googling.

Unfortunately, after following the exact same steps as the mister in below video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9U-g0sz388

I'm a little clueless on why I don't see a "A:\>" prompt like in the video?

The card is working, as I can see an increase in ram memory to 640KB during boot and this screen shortly after;

Though eventually ends in the following screen:

No A:\> to be seen and I'm not familiar with the basic lingo to access the content of the SD-512 SD card / Sofarun.

Anyone got an idea what I'm doing wrong? Afaics the 2GB SD card is correctly formatted to Fat16 and I have done the exact same as the guy in the youtube video. Even without any card in the expansion slot I don't see an A:\> prompt, is this normal?

If there is a MSX expert in the vicinity of Nijmegen Netherlands willing to help, you're very welcome! If this all fails I'll probably look for a way to write a disk with moonblaster on it and figure out a way outside of fancy SD card reading :) .

I’m in Venlo. You are welcome to come over and we can have a look what is causing it.

I'm in Nijmegen Smile But yeah, you don't need the SD stuff to use Moonblaster.

What you need to do is copy NEXTOR.SYS and COMMAND2.COM to the first partition of the SD card. (As shown in the video, with the boot files.)

Once you're in BASIC, what happens if you give the FILES command?

I've followed the exact same steps, copied over the same files as in the video, I'll try copying over to different SD cards to see if it might be the SD card that is causing problems (as a matter of fact it is a SD adapter with a Sandisk microsd inside, but this shouldn't be the problem).

"Bad drive name"

Any clues?

Does _fdisk work from basic? Does it see the partitions?

When you say "partitions" what exactly do you mean? I formatted the 2GB SD card using Fat16 and dragged the necessary files over / used the same folder structure as in the youtube video (SR for the sofarun files and GAMES for the roms and dsk files). Should the SD card be partitioned in a special way other then what is stated above?

If I enter _fdisk I get the following screen;

Djeroek: OK, what if you press 1?

@marcoo as you can see in the video the OP mentioned, that should work fine.

I just did and maybe I should have waited longer, but after nothing happened 2 minutes in, I've turned the computer off. It basically just removed the "1. " & "ESC. Exit" portion in the screenshot above, leaving the SDmapper... text and "Select the device driver" in the bottom of the screen. I've pressed a lot of keys, but nothing seems to happen.

It should have shown the partitions...

Did you also format the SD card on Linux, like in the video?

Sometime _FDISK can be especialy unstable. Avoid going back to the previous step into the menu. Try to remove the partition witn a PC or Mac, and retry to format it and create the partition with _FDISK. Then if it works, copy NEXTOR.SYS and COMMAND2.COM to the disk.
