http://saw.minidns.net/sound/index_e.html - on this page there is a chart that lists many of the yamaha FM soundchips... the OPNa is related to the OPM (in the cx5m) and it says there is a mode called CSM on channels 3/6 - i have no idea what this means

1) what is CSM?

2) on the CX5m (sfg05) why is the "CSM" preset #47 silent? - there must be some link between the "CSM mode" mentioned and the "CSM" preset

1) CSM stands for Composite Sinusoidal Modelling. Using all operators in parallel, this mode can be used to synthesize speech. Although I wouldn't know exactly how Smile2
IIRC, the idea is that each operator gets set to a fixed frequency or at least fixed in relation to each other, and then by adjusting the output level of each operator you can (re)generate a certain sound. Like doing the inverse of a Fourier transformation.

2) I guess the CSM preset just enables this CSM mode and nothing more... just a guess tho.

I think that CX5M is the legendary msx computer that costs 1200$.If it has a low serial number it costs even more than Bill Gate's new apartment.(Sorry i just can't stop laughing every time i see CX5M,i always remember the post of the guy that wanted 1200$).

haha... mine cost me a bit more than i wanted to spend actually - something like $200 - but it came with SFG05 instead of SFG01... the previous owner bought the upgrade... so i bought it regardless of the price

as far as CSM goes - thats pretty strange... its too bad there isnt more software for the CX5m to use it for everything it can do... maybe one day a tracker ._.

Nice website. A small note, there's a dead link at the bottom of the hardware page (SFG-05/01 to MSX Cartridge adapter)

nah, it's my site, but I disabled the link a while ago because I cannot completely verify the image is correct or mirrored (which in the wrong case would blow the module). the correct link is http://www.rgp.nl/cx5m/adapter.html - for those who dare....
