Effect

Disables that hanguls are grouped into blocks. It's a feature of the Hangul characters used in Korea, available when the hangul mode is enabled by the 한글 key.

With version 4 of Hangul BASIC developed in ROM format by Korean MSX fan Plaire, it can be applied to characters from non-Korean machines, that are available after pressing of KANA/CYRILLIC key to switch to Japanese or Russian characters or when pressing simultaneously the CODE key on all other machines if the Korean characters are not selected.

Syntax

CALL HANOFF

It must be entered in SCREEN 0 or 1. If you use it in SCREEN 9, it will lead to an error and a subsequent misbehaviour of CALL HANON.

This instruction is disabled by default on Korean MSX2s. You must reset the bit 1 at the FCADh address to enable CALL HANON/HANOFF instruction. The bit 0 allows you to display the Hangul one by one when set. Be careful not to set these two bits at the same time outside SCREEN 9, otherwise you won't be able to enter any more characters.

Except in SCREEN 9, it's better to use

  • POKE-851,0 or POKE&HFCAD,0 instead of CALL HANON
  • POKE-851,1 or POKE&HFCAD,1 instead of CALL HANOFF
