The Sanyo PHC-28S was aimed at the French market. However the keyboard is QWERTY instead of AZERTY as would be typical for the French market. This model is based on the MPC-5.

Contrary to the Japanese machine, this computer has an expansion bus slot: it can be used as third cartridge slot with an adapter, which was original meant for the MEB-01 slot expander, which in turn can be connected to the MPC-X, a Graphic Expander Unit which adds a MSX2 palette, high-resolution, superimposing, still function and zooming and supports a lightpen. Note however that Sanyo has never released the MPC-X in Europe.

This machine has been officially released in France by S.F.C.E with 16kB RAM in the first instance then with 32kB. The German company Olympia has released the PHC-28 with an AZERTY keyboard.

The PHC-28S is a MSX1 with a Z80A from Sharp (LH0080A). It was often proposed with a RAM extension of 16kB or 48kB.

Compared to the model MPC-5, a printer port and an expansion bus have been added, the RF output has been replaced by a RGB output.

The PHC-28S with 16kB RAM can be upgraded to 32kB. There are two empty locations on the PCB to solder two extra 4416 RAMs and two 100nF ceramic capacitors. Preferably use RAM of same speed.
